Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Library

Giorgio Moretti stood in the doorway, holding a heavy black pistol equipped with a long titanium silencer.

Behind him stood three heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas.

"I had a feeling you were up to something, nurse," Giorgio said, his voice cold and devoid of all emotion as he stepped into the room. "Drugging my guards was a amateur mistake."

Giorgio’s eyes moved to the bed, expecting to see his brother's limp, dying form.

Instead, he found Lorenzo sitting upright on the edge of the bed, wearing a dark silk robe, supported by Clara, who stood firmly at his side like a shield.

Giorgio froze in absolute, speech-stopping horror. The gun in his hand trembled slightly.

"L-Lorenzo..." Giorgio whispered, his face turning as white as a sheet. "You're... you're awake."

"Disappointed, brother?" Lorenzo said, his voice stronger now, dripping with pure, unadulterated venom. He stood up slowly, leaning heavily on Clara’s shoulder, but standing tall, his massive six-foot-two frame imposing a terrifying aura over the entire room. "You thought seven weeks in a dark room would make me weak. You thought a sniper's bullet would bury me."

Giorgio swallowed hard, his shock quickly twisting into desperate, murderous rage. He raised his pistol, aiming it directly at Lorenzo’s chest.

"It doesn't matter!" Giorgio screamed, his cool composure completely shattering. "It changes nothing! You think you can walk out of here? The entire estate is surrounded by my men! The board signs the trust over to me at nine tomorrow morning! Once you're dead, I take everything!"

"You take nothing, Giorgio," Lorenzo said calmly, taking a slow step forward, taking the full weight off Clara. "Because you forgot one simple rule our father taught us."

Giorgio’s eyes narrowed. "What rule?"

"Never leave evidence in a safe... when a three-year-old child is playing beneath the table," Lorenzo revealed.

Giorgio’s eyes widened in sheer, sudden realization. He looked at Clara, then looked back at Lorenzo. "The kid... the maid’s kid saw..."

"She saw the silencer you hid in the library safe, Giorgio," Clara interjected fiercely, her eyes blazing with hatred for the man who had threatened her daughter. "She told me. She told Mr. Lorenzo. And Elena has already sent the security video files to the District Attorney’s office!"

Giorgio looked at Elena, who held up her satellite phone, showing a live confirmation screen: FILE TRANSFER COMPLETE - NEW YORK STATE POLICE.

"You bitched!" Giorgio roared, pulling the trigger!

CLICK!

Nothing happened.

Giorgio frantically racked the slide of his pistol, pulling the trigger again. CLICK! CLICK!

Lorenzo smiled—a dark, terrifying expression that sent cold terror straight into Giorgio’s soul.

"Did you really think Nurse Elena left your weapons loaded when she prepared the house tonight?" Lorenzo asked softly. "My loyal security team isn't sleeping downstairs, Giorgio. They’ve been waiting outside the gate for my command."

Suddenly, the heavy glass windows of the suite shattered inward in a shower of sparkling light!

Flashbang grenades bounced across the hardwood floor, exploding in blinding white light and deafening booms!

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Dozens of armed tactical officers in heavy Kevlar gear burst through the windows and the hallway doors, swarming the room. Giorgio’s three mercenaries immediately dropped their weapons, throwing their hands into the air.

Giorgio tried to run toward the private balcony, but Lorenzo moved with terrifying speed for a man who had just emerged from a coma. He reached out, his massive, scarred hand grabbing Giorgio by the collar of his expensive suit, slamming him brutally down onto the hard floor!

Lorenzo stood over his trembling brother, pressing his heavy shoe firmly against Giorgio’s chest.

"You tried to kill me in the dark, Giorgio," Lorenzo growled, looking down at his defeated brother with absolute disdain. "Now you get to spend the rest of your life rotting in a concrete cell."

State troopers swarmed forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Giorgio’s wrists, dragging him screaming and cursing out of the room.

The room fell into silence, save for the howling winter wind rushing through the broken windows.

Lorenzo stood in the center of the ruined suite, his chest heaving, his breathing heavy. He slowly turned around, looking at Clara and Elena.

Then he collapsed onto one knee, his strength finally failing him.

Clara rushed forward, catching him before he hit the floor, supporting his heavy shoulders against her chest.

"I've got you," Clara whispered softly, tears streaming down her face. "I've got you, Lorenzo. It's over."

Lorenzo looked up at her, his steel-gray eyes softening into a look of deep, overwhelming gratitude.

"Where... is your daughter?" Lorenzo rasped weakly.

"She’s safe downstairs," Clara smiled through her tears. "Waiting for us."

May you like

Lorenzo reached out, his calloused hand gently patting Clara’s shoulder.

"Then let's go downstairs, Clara," Lorenzo said softly. "I think I owe a little girl a very big thank you."
