Chapter 14 - Poisoned Chalice

The grand museum was dripping in diamonds, expensive champagne, and the suffocating stench of political hypocrisy.

Clara wore a breathtaking, backless crimson gown that clung to every curve of her body like a second skin.

Arthur walked beside her in a bespoke tuxedo, looking like a dark, predatory god descending among mortals.

Every eye in the grand ballroom was fixed on the city’s most notorious couple as they glided down the sweeping marble staircase.

Clara kept a polite, chillingly perfect smile on her face as they navigated the sea of wealthy socialites.

She spotted the chief of police standing near the ice sculpture, sweating profusely despite the cool air conditioning.

“He looks nervous,” Clara murmured to Arthur, keeping her voice pitched for his ears only.

“He should be,” Arthur replied, his hand resting possessively on the bare skin of her lower back.

A waiter in a crisp white uniform approached them, carrying a silver tray with two crystal flutes of champagne.

Arthur reached out to take a glass, but Clara’s sharp eyes caught a minute detail that made her blood run cold.

The waiter’s hands were trembling violently, and his knuckles were tattooed with a faded, Cyrillic prison star.

Before Arthur could lift the glass to his lips, Clara intentionally stumbled forward, knocking the tray violently to the floor.

The crystal shattered into a hundred pieces, the expensive champagne soaking into the priceless Persian rug.

The ballroom fell dead silent as the guests turned to stare at the commotion.

“My apologies,” Clara said loudly, projecting the image of an embarrassed socialite.

“I am so terribly clumsy in these heels.”

The waiter panicked, turning to bolt toward the kitchen doors.

Arthur’s reflexes were faster than humanly possible.

He dropped his polite facade instantly, lunging forward and grabbing the waiter by the collar of his uniform.

He slammed the man face-first into a marble pillar, shattering the waiter's nose with a sickening crunch.

The wealthy guests screamed, scrambling away in absolute terror as the mafia boss revealed his true nature.

Clara knelt gracefully amidst the shattered glass, pulling a small silver pin from her hair.

She dipped the pin into the spilled champagne and held it up to the light.

The silver metal instantly oxidized, turning a corrosive, unnatural shade of black.

She stood up slowly, locking eyes with the chief of police across the chaotic room.

“Cyanide,” Clara announced, her voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings.

Arthur hauled the bleeding assassin to his feet, his eyes burning with a murderous, unholy rage.

“Take him to the basement of the estate,” Arthur ordered his security detail, who had already swarmed the room.

The gala was over, and the war with the Russians had officially begun.
