Chapter 9 - THE LONDON ARBITRATION

The rain in London fell differently than it did in South Carolina. It was a cold, misty drizzle that shrouded the gray stone buildings of the Royal Courts of Justice in a perpetual fog.
Inside the grand, wood-paneled arbitration chamber on the third floor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Grant Callahan sat at the polished mahogany defense table, looking sharp, formidable, and completely restored in a charcoal three-piece suit. Beside him sat Emily Carter, wearing an elegant navy blazer, holding a tablet with the foundation's financial records.
Sitting right behind their chairs, looking entirely regal and calm despite the formal environment, was Titan. A special service permit had been issued by the High Court, allowing the massive dog to remain at Emily’s side throughout the proceedings.
Across the aisle sat Victoria Sterling.
She was a striking woman in her early fifties, dressed in an expensive white designer suit, her icy blue eyes fixed on Grant with a look of pure, aristocratic contempt. Beside her sat three high-priced British barristers in traditional white wigs, surrounded by stacks of leather-bound legal briefs.
The Lead Arbitrator, Lord Justice Montgomery, struck his wooden gavel against the block.
"We are here to resolve the matter of Sterling Logistics versus Callahan Enterprise regarding the control of the Charleston Maritime Charter," Lord Montgomery declared, his cultured British accent echoing through the chamber. "Counselor, present your claimant's argument."
Victoria’s lead barrister stood up smoothly, adjusting his robes. "Your Lordship, my client, Mrs. Victoria Sterling, entered into a binding joint venture contract with the late Thomas Callahan fifteen years ago. The contract explicitly dictates that upon any restructuring or legal transfer of Callahan Enterprise, forty percent of the coastal shipping rights revert directly to Sterling Logistics."
The barrister held up an old, yellowed document bearing a dark wax seal.
"This document," the barrister continued confidently, "is valid, legal, and unappealable. Mr. Grant Callahan’s recent transfer of corporate assets into a private charitable foundation constitutes a breach of this agreement. We request an immediate injunction freezing all Callahan shipping assets worldwide."
Lord Montgomery peered over his half-moon spectacles at Grant’s table. "Mr. Callahan, how do you respond?"
Grant didn't stand up immediately. He slowly unbuttoned his suit jacket, leaning his hands flat against the wooden table.
"My father did sign that agreement fifteen years ago, Your Lordship," Grant said, his deep, authoritative voice carrying effortlessly through the room. "However, Mrs. Sterling omitted a critical secondary clause embedded in paragraph twelve of that exact contract."
Victoria’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Grant signaled to Emily.
Emily stood up gracefully, stepping forward to hand a thin, blue leather folder directly to the court clerk, who passed it up to Lord Montgomery.
"Inside that folder," Emily explained clearly, her voice confident and unshakeable, "is the original forensic audit of Sterling Logistics conducted by the Swiss Financial Authority three weeks ago. It proves that for the past seven years, Mrs. Sterling used her joint venture accounts to funnel unregistered cargo through the Port of Charleston—cargo directly linked to the illicit operations of Viktor Vance and Julian Callahan."
A quiet gasp rippled through the small gallery behind them.
Victoria’s barrister turned his head sharply to look at his client. "Victoria... what is this?"
"It's a lie!" Victoria spat, her cool facade cracking for the first time. "They fabricated those records!"
"Under British Maritime Law, Section 4," Emily continued, ignoring Victoria’s outburst entirely, "any contract established under a joint venture becomes null and void if one party utilizes the venture for criminal racketeering. Furthermore, all claimed assets are subject to immediate federal seizure."
Lord Montgomery flipped rapidly through the Swiss audit reports, his bushy eyebrows rising higher with every page.
He looked down at Victoria Sterling, his face hardening into an expression of severe disdain.
"Mrs. Sterling," Lord Montgomery said sternly. "These documents carry the official seal of the Interpol Financial Crimes Division. Are you asserting that Interpol has falsified court evidence?"
Victoria stammered, her face draining of color. "My Lord... I... I was unaware of Vance's internal accounting—"
"Silence!" Lord Montgomery slammed his gavel down with a deafening CRACK!
"This tribunal finds the claimant’s suit to be not only entirely devoid of merit, but a transparent attempt to conceal active criminal enterprise!" Lord Montgomery boomed. "The claim is dismissed with prejudice! Furthermore, I am issuing an immediate order holding Mrs. Sterling’s assets within the UK jurisdiction pending her extradition to the United States!"
Two Scotland Yard officers standing near the rear doors immediately stepped forward, walking down the center aisle toward Victoria’s table.
Victoria backed away, her hands shaking as she grabbed her designer handbag. "You think you've won, Grant?!" she shouted hysterical, as the officers clicked steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You think you can just run your little empire with a broke nurse and a monster dog?! You're a mobster, Grant! You'll always be a mobster!"
Grant stood up slowly, looking at her with quiet, unbothered dignity.
"I used to be," Grant said softly. "Now, I'm just a man protecting his family."
As the officers dragged Victoria out of the wooden doors, her hysterical shouting fading into the stone hallway outside, the arbitration chamber went completely quiet.
Jack Mercer leaned over from behind, a massive grin on his face. "Clean sweep, boss. The Charleston shipping lines are officially secure forever."
Grant didn't look at the empty legal tables. He turned to Emily, who was smiling brightly, her brown eyes shining with happiness.
He reached out, taking her hand gently into his large, warm palm.
"You were brilliant in there, Nurse Carter," Grant said softly, his voice full of warmth.
"I learned from the best," Emily replied, her cheeks turning slightly pink as she squeezed his hand.

Titan stepped up beside them, bumping his massive head gently against both of their joined hands, letting out a soft, contented huff.
Grant looked down at the dog, then up into Emily’s eyes, knowing that the long, dark road behind them had finally led to a bright, unbroken future.
