Chapter 3 - THE DOCKS OF SULLIVAN

The sound of Titan’s roar shattered the sterile quiet of the hospital corridor, ringing off the tiled walls like a thunderclap.

Before the lead guard could fully raise his suppressed pistol, Jack Mercer drew his own weapon from beneath his trench coat and fired two rapid shots straight into the ceiling.

BANG! BANG!

Plaster rained down in a white cloud. The emergency fire sprinklers instantly triggered, hissing loudly as cold water poured from the ceiling, flooding the hallway in seconds.

"GO!" Jack screamed over the alarm, grabbing Emily’s arm and shoving her back toward the emergency stairwell. "Get Titan out of here!"

"What about Grant?!" Emily shouted, her clothes soaking through instantly under the downpour of the sprinklers.

"I’ll lock down the ICU suite!" Jack yelled, turning to fire two more rounds down the hall to keep Vance’s men pinned behind the corner pillars. "They can't move him if the elevators are shut! Take my truck! Keys are in the ignition! Go to the dock house at Pier 14!"

Vance’s men returned fire, bullets whining off the steel doorframes.

Emily didn't hesitate any longer. She grabbed Titan’s heavy leather harness. "Titan, with me!"

The dog didn't need to be told twice. He turned and sprinted alongside her as she slammed her shoulder against the heavy fire door, thrusting them into the echoey concrete stairwell. They bounded down four flights of stairs, the dog's heavy paws clicking rapidly against the concrete.

They burst through the ground-floor exit into the blinding rain of the rear parking lot.

Jack’s massive black Ford F-150 was idling near the dumpster, smoke rising from its exhaust. Emily yanked the passenger door open, and Titan leaped effortlessly into the cab, taking up the entire front seat. Emily scrambled into the driver's side, threw the truck into reverse, and slammed her foot onto the gas pedal.

The tires squealed against the wet asphalt as the truck backed out, spinning around just as two of Vance’s men burst through the rear doors of the hospital, raising their weapons.

Emily floored the accelerator. The truck surged forward, crashing straight through the light plastic parking gate and roaring out onto the slick, dark streets of Charleston.

Rain hammered against the windshield, the wipers working frantically to clear the glass. Beside her, Titan sat upright, his dark eyes staring intensely through the rain, panting heavily.

Emily’s hands were glued to the steering wheel, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Okay... okay... Pier 14. We can do this."

She glanced down at her phone lying on the center console. The screen lit up with a caller ID: UNKNOWN NUMBER.

She hit the speaker button. "Hello?!"

"Listen to me carefully, Emily," Jack’s raspy voice came through the speaker, accompanied by the distant sound of shouting and alarms. "I locked down the ICU floor. Hospital security and Charleston PD are arriving now. Vance can't touch Grant at the hospital without starting a full-scale shootout with the cops."

Emily let out a ragged sigh of relief. "Thank God."

"But Bell escaped," Jack warned, his voice grim. "He took off from the hospital parking garage five minutes ago. He's heading to Pier 14 right now to clear out Grant's primary server vault before we can secure it. That vault holds the paper trail for every offshore account Vance used to pay off the hitmen."

"What do you want me to do?" Emily asked, her voice shaking as she navigated the heavy truck onto the dark highway toward the coast.

"I’m stuck here dealing with the police," Jack said. "I need you to intercept Bell. Don't fight him, Emily. Just hold him there until my backup arrives. Use Titan."

"Jack, I’m a nurse, not a mobster!"

"You sat in a pool of blood and tamed a killer dog in thirty seconds," Jack shot back fiercely. "You’re tougher than half the guys on my payroll. Don't let Bell destroy those drives. If those drives burn, Vance wins, Grant dies, and you and I are next on their list."

The line clicked dead.

Emily stared at the road ahead, her knuckles white on the leather wheel. She looked sideways at Titan. The massive Cane Corso met her gaze, letting out a low, reassuring huff.

"Right," Emily muttered to herself. "Just go confront a crooked doctor and a ruthless syndicate at a dark dock in the middle of a hurricane. Simple."

Twenty minutes later, the truck rolled silently into the industrial shipping yard of Pier 14 on Sullivan’s Island.

The area was desolate, surrounded by towering stacks of rusted metal shipping containers, creaking cranes, and the dark, churning waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The storm was reaching its peak, wind howling through the metal structures like a dying beast.

Emily parked the truck behind a stack of wooden pallets, turning off the headlights.

Through the sheet of pouring rain, she saw a single light shining from the upper window of a converted brick office building at the edge of the wooden pier. Parked right in front of the building was Dr. Howard Bell’s silver Mercedes.

"Stay close to me," Emily whispered to Titan.

She opened the truck door quietly. Titan glided out into the rain beside her, keeping his body low to the ground.

They moved stealthily through the shadows of the shipping containers, the cold rain soaking through Emily’s jacket instantly. They reached the side door of the brick building. It was slightly ajar, the lock snapped clean off.

Emily pushed the door open, stepping into a dark, concrete hallway smelling of salt water, diesel fuel, and burnt copper.

From upstairs, she heard the sound of glass shattering, followed by cursing.

Emily crept up the narrow wooden stairs, Titan right behind her, his paws making zero sound on the steps.

She reached the second-floor landing and peeked around the corner into a large office.

The room was torn apart. Filing cabinets were overturned, papers scattered everywhere. In the center of the room sat a large, heavy steel safe, its electronic keypad smashed open.

Dr. Howard Bell was kneeling in front of the safe, frantically stuffing thick black hard drives and leather-bound ledgers into a waterproof duffel bag. A heavy iron crowbar lay on the floor beside him.

"You really should have taken the money, Howard," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the far side of the room.

Emily pulled back behind the wall, her heart dropping.

Standing near the broken window overlooking the ocean was Viktor Vance. He was holding a sleek, silver handgun fitted with a long suppressor, aiming it casually at the back of Bell’s head.

Bell froze, his hands still inside the safe. He slowly raised his arms, turning his head. "Viktor... I’m securing the files for us, just like we planned."

"No, Howard," Vance said softly, taking a step toward the doctor. "You were securing the files for yourself. So you could blackmail me for the rest of your pathetic life once Grant was in the ground."

"I saved your neck!" Bell stammered, panic finally cracking his arrogant facade. "I tried to poison Grant in the ambulance! The nurse stopped me!"

"And that was your mistake," Vance said coldly, stopping three feet from Bell. "You let a twenty-nine-year-old girl ruin a ten-million-dollar operation. You're sloppy, Howard. And sloppy men become liabilities."

Vance slowly raised the gun, aligning the sight with Bell’s forehead.

Inside the hallway, Emily knew she had seconds. If Vance killed Bell, he would take the drives, burn the building, and walk away scot-free.

She looked down at Titan. The dog was staring at Vance, his body trembling with violent, suppressed energy.

Emily placed her hand on Titan’s head, leaning down to his ear.

"Fetch," she whispered.

Titan didn't just move—he exploded around the corner like a cannonball.

145 pounds of muscle slammed directly into Viktor Vance’s side before the man could even pull the trigger.

BANG!

The suppressed gun fired wildly into the ceiling as Vance was thrown across the room, crashing heavily through a wooden desk, his weapon flying across the floor and sliding right to Emily’s feet.

Vance screamed in pain as Titan pinned him to the floor, his massive jaws locking onto Vance’s right forearm, crushing the bone through his expensive suit jacket.

"GET IT OFF ME! GET IT OFF ME!" Vance shrieked, his face twisting in terror.

Bell saw his chance. He grabbed the duffel bag filled with hard drives and made a desperate dash toward the rear fire exit.

"Not today, Doctor!" Emily yelled.

She grabbed the heavy iron crowbar off the floor and swung it with all her strength, slamming it straight into Dr. Bell’s knees.

Bell let out a sickening crack and a howl of agony, collapsing onto the floor, dropping the duffel bag. The hard drives spilled across the wet floorboards.

Emily quickly snatched the duffel bag, scooping up the drives, before pointing the silver handgun—which she had retrieved from the floor—straight at Dr. Bell’s chest.

"Stay down!" she commanded, her hands steady, her voice echoing with an absolute authority she didn't know she possessed.

Bell clutched his broken leg, sobbing on the floor. "Please... Emily... don't..."

Behind her, Titan stood over the bleeding, groaning form of Viktor Vance, his chest heaving, his teeth bared inches from Vance’s neck, waiting for Emily's next order.

Just then, heavy footsteps thundered up the stairs.

Jack Mercer burst into the room, flanked by four armed bodyguards, their weapons raised.

Jack stopped dead in his tracks, taking in the scene: Viktor Vance pinned under Titan, Dr. Bell weeping on the floor with a broken leg, and Emily Carter standing in the middle of the room, holding a bag of evidence in one hand and a gun in the other.

Jack slowly lowered his weapon, a massive, genuine grin breaking across his scarred face.

"Damn, Nurse Carter," Jack laughed softly, shaking his head in absolute disbelief. "I think you picked the wrong profession."
