Chapter 5 - THE GOVERNOR’S WARRANT

The high-ceilinged marble lobby of Roper Hospital exploded into absolute chaos as twelve heavily armed officers from the South Carolina State Tactical Unit poured through the glass doors, taking up perimeter positions around the elevators.

Walking calmly through the middle of the armed formation was Julian Callahan.

He looked strikingly similar to his older brother Grant—the same sharp jawline, the same piercing gray eyes—but where Grant carried the rugged, intimidating aura of a man who had built his empire on muscle and grit, Julian was refined, ruthless, and impeccably tailored in a double-breasted Italian suit.

Beside Julian walked a tall, thin man in a judge’s robe, holding a thick red leather folder.

Jack Mercer stood at the top of the lobby staircase, four of his private bodyguards behind him, his hands resting near his belt.

"You're in the wrong building, Julian," Jack called down, his voice echoing over the marble floor.

Julian stopped at the base of the stairs, looking up at Jack with a smooth, condescending smile. "Ah, Jack. Still acting as the loyal guard dog, I see. Where is my brother?"

"He's recovering from surgery," Jack spat. "And he doesn't want to see you."

Julian stepped forward, holding out his hand. The judge beside him passed him the red folder.

"I'm afraid what Grant wants is no longer relevant, Jack," Julian said smoothly. "This is an emergency order signed by the Circuit Court and countersigned by the Governor's office. Due to the catastrophic security breach at the Sullivan's Island estate and Grant's severe physical incapacity, the state has declared Callahan Enterprise an active threat to regional infrastructure."

Julian flipped the document open, displaying a heavy gold state seal.

"Under the State Emergency Commerce Act, full administrative control of all Callahan assets, shipping lines, and bank accounts is temporarily transferred to me, as primary secondary kinsman," Julian declared, his voice echoing loudly. "Including full legal guardianship over Grant's person and care."

Jack’s eyes narrowed into slits. "You set this whole thing up. You hired Vance to put a bullet in Grant so you could walk in with a judge in your pocket."

Julian smiled thinly. "An accusation without evidence is just noise, Jack. Now, stand aside. My medical team is taking Grant to a secure facility in Columbia."

"Over my dead body," Jack warned, pulling his jacket back.

The twelve tactical officers instantly raised their submachine guns, aiming them straight at Jack and his men.

"That can easily be arranged, Mercer," Julian said coldly.

Upstairs, inside ICU Room 4, Emily watched the live security feed on the wall monitor, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Grant sat upright in his hospital bed, his face grim as he watched his brother on the screen. He turned to Emily. "Emily, you need to leave. Now. Take Titan and use the service elevator in the back."

"I'm not leaving you here with him," Emily insisted, stepping closer to the bed. "He's going to kill you, Grant! Once he gets you out of this hospital and into his private facility, you'll have an 'accidental' heart attack within twenty-four hours!"

"She's right, boss," Jack’s voice came over the wall intercom from the hallway. "I can hold them off in the lobby for maybe five minutes before the state troopers push through."

Grant’s gray eyes flashed with intense calculation. He looked at the heavy leather briefcase sitting on his bedside table—the one containing the hard drives Emily had recovered from Pier 14.

"Julian thinks he's won because he bought the Governor," Grant rasped, his voice filled with cold fury. "He doesn't know we recovered the Pier 14 server drives."

Grant grabbed Emily's wrist, his grip surprisingly strong despite his weak condition.

"Emily, listen to me," Grant said, looking straight into her eyes. "Inside those hard drives is an encrypted file named BLACKTHORN. It contains the offshore bank numbers that link Julian directly to the syndicate that funded the hit on me. If that file is uploaded to the Federal Grand Jury network, Julian’s court order becomes a federal arrest warrant."

"How do we upload it?" Emily asked quickly.

"It can only be unlocked using a two-factor physical key," Grant explained, pulling a thin silver chain from around his neck. Hanging from the chain was a heavy, custom-cut steel flash drive. He placed it directly into Emily's palm. "The secondary terminal is located at my main estate in Sullivan's Island. In the hidden basement vault."

Emily looked at the steel key in her hand, then at Grant. "You want me to go back to the mansion?"

"It’s the only place with an unhackable fiber-optic line directly connected to the federal court server," Grant said grimly. "Julian's men think the mansion is empty because of the fire. They won't expect anyone to go back there."

He turned to the dog sitting beside the bed. "Titan. Go with her. Protect her with your life."

Titan stood up instantly, letting out a low, solid bark.

"What about you?" Emily asked, panic rising in her chest. "If I leave, Julian will take you!"

"Let him take me," Grant said, a ruthless, dangerous smile touching his lips. "It will buy you time. He won't kill me until he secures my primary encryption codes, which are in my head. I’ll keep him busy. You get to the mansion, plug that drive in, and burn his world to the ground."

Emily swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the steel key. She looked at Grant, seeing no fear in the man—only an iron will that refused to break.

"Five minutes, Nurse Carter," Grant whispered. "Give me five minutes of your courage."

Emily nodded firmly. "I’ll do it."

She grabbed the heavy briefcase containing the hard drives, strapped Titan’s leather harness tightly around his chest, and moved toward the rear service door.

"Emily," Grant called out softly behind her.

She stopped, looking back.

Grant looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "Be careful."

"I have a good guard dog," Emily replied, offering a tiny, resolute smile.

She slipped through the door into the dimly lit service corridor just as the sound of heavy boots and breaking glass echoed from the main lobby below.

Emily and Titan hurried down the service staircase, emerging into the rainy rear alleyway behind the hospital. She sprinted to Jack's heavy Ford truck, tossing the briefcase into the passenger seat before climbing in. Titan leaped into the cab beside her, slamming the door shut with his heavy tail.

Emily started the engine, throwing the truck into drive, and tore out of the alley just as three state trooper cruisers pulled up to block the front entrance of the hospital.

She checked her rearview mirror, watching the flashing red lights fade into the storm behind her.

She was no longer just an emergency nurse trying to pay her father's rent. She was carrying the keys to an empire, driving straight back into a burned-out mansion, with a 145-pound monster beside her and a corrupt state government hunting her down.

Emily pressed her foot firmly onto the accelerator, heading straight back to Sullivan's Island.
