Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OVER THE EMPIRE

The storm had passed by the time dawn broke over the Charleston peninsula, leaving the skies a crisp, pale blue over the quiet waters of the harbor.

Inside the high-security private suite on the top floor of Roper Hospital, the morning light filtered through heavy blinds. The faint, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.

Grant Callahan slowly opened his eyes.

The world was a blurry haze of white ceiling tiles and sharp, burning pain in his abdomen and shoulder. He tried to move his left arm, but a quiet groan escaped his lips instead.

"Don't try to sit up," a voice said softly from the corner of the room.

Grant turned his head slowly.

Sitting in a leather armchair beside his bed was Emily Carter. She looked exhausted, heavy dark circles beneath her eyes, her hair still damp from the rain, wearing a pair of clean, oversized hospital scrubs someone had lent her.

And lying right beside her chair, his massive head resting comfortably on Emily’s lap, was Titan.

Grant stared at the dog. Then at Emily. His dry lips parted. "Titan..." he rasped, his voice rough as sandpaper.

The dog’s ears twitched. He raised his head, looking at Grant, then gently licked Emily’s hand before laying back down.

Grant’s eyes widened slightly in disbelief. He knew his dog. Titan didn't let strangers touch him, let alone rest his head in their lap like a lapdog.

"Who... who are you?" Grant managed to ask, his piercing gray eyes locking onto Emily.

"I’m Emily," she said gently, pouring a small cup of water from a pitcher on the bedside table. She held the straw to his lips. "I’m the ER nurse who worked on you at your house."

Grant took a small sip of water, his mind working rapidly through the fog of anesthesia. Memory began to flood back in sharp, violent fragments—the fire at the mansion, the gunshots, the sound of glass breaking, the betrayal.

"Jack..." Grant rasped. "Where is Jack?"

As if on cue, the heavy suite door swung open quietly. Jack Mercer stepped inside, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

When Jack saw Grant awake, a massive weight seemed to lift from his shoulders. "Boss. You're awake."

"Report, Jack," Grant commanded, his natural authority returning despite his weak physical state.

Jack set the briefcase on the bedside table and gestured toward Emily. "If it wasn't for Nurse Carter here, boss, you’d be in a body bag, Vance would own your company, and Titan would have been put down by a police sniper."

Grant listened in silence as Jack detailed everything that had transpired over the last six hours—how Emily had walked into the ballroom and tamed Titan, how she had blocked Dr. Bell’s lethal injection in the ambulance, how she had snapped the photo of the vial, and how she had tracked Bell to Pier 14, neutralised him with a crowbar, and set Titan on Viktor Vance.

As Jack spoke, Grant’s gaze never left Emily’s face. His expression shifted from quiet surprise to profound, intense respect.

"Where are Vance and Bell now?" Grant asked, his voice cold as iron.

"Federal custody," Jack replied, opening the briefcase to reveal a stack of legal documents and hard drives. "The drives Emily recovered from Pier 14 contained everything—Vance's offshore payments to the hitmen, Bell’s medical malpractice records, and the full list of city officials Vance bought off to clear the shipping lanes. The U.S. Attorney signed the indictments an hour ago. Vance Global is finished."

Grant closed his eyes for a long moment, taking a deep breath. When he opened them, he looked directly at Emily.

"You saved my life, Emily," Grant said softly. "And you protected my dog. There aren't many people in this world who would step into a room of armed men for a stranger."

"You weren't a stranger," Emily said quietly, meeting his gaze. "You were my patient. And Titan was just scared."

Grant let out a quiet, raspy laugh that made him wince from the pain in his ribs. "Scared? That beast weighs one-forty-five and has torn three men apart."

"He was scared," Emily maintained firmly, stroking Titan’s ears. "Animals don't attack like that unless they feel cornered. He loved you, and he thought everyone was trying to hurt you. He just needed someone to show him he wasn't alone."

Grant looked at her, something soft and rarely seen shifting behind his hardened eyes.

"Jack," Grant ordered calmly.

"Yes, boss?"

"Find out everything about Nurse Carter’s current financial situation. Her debts, her father's medical bills, her apartment lease. Clear every dime of it by noon."

Emily instantly sat up straight, her eyebrows pulling together. "Mr. Callahan, no. I didn't do this for money."

"I know you didn't," Grant said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "That’s precisely why I’m doing it. You gave me my life back, Emily. Paying off a few bills is the absolute bare minimum."

"Mr. Callahan, please—"

"It's already done, Emily," Jack chimed in with a slight smile. "I wired the funds to your father's facility twenty minutes ago. His care is paid in full for the next ten years. Your landlord dropped the eviction suit, and your bank account has been topped off."

Emily sat back in her chair, completely stunned into silence. A lump formed in her throat, tears stinging the backs of her eyes. For two agonizing years, she had carried the crushing weight of her father's bills, working seventy hours a week, starving herself to pay rent. And in a single morning, the weight had simply vanished.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice cracking slightly.

"Don't thank me yet," Grant said softly, his eyes darkening slightly as he looked toward the window. "Because Vance and Bell were just the foot soldiers, Emily."

Jack’s smile vanished, his body instantly stiffening. "What do you mean, boss?"

Grant turned his head back toward Jack, his voice dropping into a deadly, low whisper.

"Viktor Vance didn't have the codes to my private security vault, Jack. Only three people in the world had those codes. Me, you... and my brother, Julian."

Jack’s face went completely pale. "Julian? Julian’s been in London for six months."

"Julian came back to Charleston two days ago," Grant said, his jaw clenching tightly. "He used Vance to do his dirty work. And now that Vance has failed, Julian is going to activate the secondary protocol."

Before Jack could respond, the hospital room door burst open again.

A young security officer rushed in, his face white as a sheet. "Mr. Mercer! We have a problem at the front entrance!"

Jack pulled his gun. "What is it?!"

"A fleet of dark SUVs just pulled into the ambulance bay," the officer panted. "They have state police escorts! A man named Julian Callahan just walked into the lobby with a court order signed by the Governor!"

May you like

Grant slowly forced himself up against his pillows, his gray eyes burning with pure, unadulterated fury.

"He's coming for the empire, Jack," Grant whispered. "And he brought the government with him."
