Chapter 8 - The 4K Financial Execution

Bradley Vance backed away from the lectern, clutching his chest, cold sweat pouring down his neck, ruining his stiff collar.

"This is an illegal disruption!" Bradley shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Mila. "That woman is just a junior clerical worker! She has no standing at an executive shareholder gala!"

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward to the front of the stage, his silver-headed cane striking the floorboards with concussive, echoing force.

CLACK.

"Let us review the executive standing of Miss Mila Hayes, Mr. Vance," Arthur Pendelton announced, his gravelly baritone silencing the entire room like an iron hammer on stone.

Arthur plugged an encrypted titanium drive into the ballroom’s master multimedia presentation console.

FLASH.

The twin four-hundred-inch high-definition digital screens mounted on either side of the stage—screens that had been programmed to display promotional videos of the Apex acquisition—flickered to life in brilliant, uncompressed 4K resolution.

The five hundred guests let out a collective, visceral gasp of absolute, paralyzed horror.

Displayed across the massive digital screens were certified banking wire manifests, unsealed Delaware corporate charters, municipal inspection bribe receipts, and intercepted audio recordings:

At the top of the master ledger was the title of the federal investigation:

OPERATION VANGUARD: THE SYSTEMATIC EXTORTION, WIRE FRAUD, AND HARBOR SMUGGLING OF APEX LOGISTICS.

Arthur Pendelton highlighted the primary transaction nodes on Screen 1:

"Item One: Over the past six months, Bradley Vance systematically siphoned $52,850,000.00 from commercial logistics escrow funds into an unlisted money-laundering network in Panama."

Arthur tapped the audio console on Screen 2:

The decrypted recording from Bradley Vance’s private office on Tuesday played through the ballroom's concert-grade surround sound with bone-chilling clarity:

"Bradley’s Voice: 'Make sure the mercenaries break into the assistant's apartment tonight. Leave the red laser photo on her desk. Tell her that if she doesn't surrender the Romano cryptographic keys by Friday, we burn her alive in her bed.'"

"Commissioner Sterling’s Voice: 'The municipal zoning board will ratify the lease seizure forty-eight hours after the encryption codes are delivered. The ten million bearer bonds cleared into my Zurich account.'"

Pandemonium exploded across The Drake Ballroom.

Institutional investors, maritime directors, and federal judges sprang out of their seats in incandescent fury, screaming at the stage.

Commissioner Sterling turned the color of wet cement, his champagne glass slipping from his trembling fingers, shattering across the parquet floor.
