Chapter 4 - The Fortress on Lake Shore Drive

At 12:30 AM, the three armored Escalades glided through the reinforced subterranean security gates of the Romano Sovereign Manor on Lake Shore Drive.

The estate was a modern, limestone-and-glass fortress perched along the private cliffs of Lake Michigan, surrounded by ten-foot security barriers, automated motion sensors, and twenty-four-hour private tactical patrols.

Luca guided Mila through the private elevator into the sixty-fifth-floor penthouse suite.

The sprawling residence was magnificent—soaring sixteen-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the dark, stormy waters of the lake, heated Italian marble floors, and a grand limestone fireplace glowing with warm, amber flames.

Waiting in the expansive study, dressed in an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit and holding a thick, gold-embossed blue leather portfolio, was eighty-two-year-old Arthur Pendelton—senior managing partner of Pendelton & Associates and the Romano syndicate’s chief legal executor.

"Good evening, Luca. Good evening, Miss Hayes," Arthur greeted them, his gravelly baritone rich with ancient authority. "I received the digital telemetry from your tactical team twenty minutes ago. We have already initiated the trace on the surveillance image."

Luca helped Mila out of her coat, draping it over a leather armchair, guiding her to sit on the plush velvet sofa before the fire. He poured a cup of hot chamomile tea, placing it into her trembling hands.

"What did you find, Arthur?" Luca asked, standing tall beside the fireplace, his gray eyes colder than dry ice.

Arthur opened his leather portfolio, setting a series of certified corporate manifests and unsealed grand jury subpoenas onto the coffee table.

"The extortion attempt against Miss Hayes is not an isolated street mugging, Luca," Arthur revealed with surgical precision.

Arthur projected the financial flowcharts onto the wall-mounted eighty-five-inch digital monitors:

"For six months, forty-two-year-old Bradley Vance—the Chief Executive Officer of Apex Logistics Global—has been attempting to acquire forty percent of Romano Maritime's deep-water shipping terminals in the Port of Chicago."

Arthur tapped the screen, displaying an encrypted transaction ledger:

"Bradley Vance entered into an illegal fifty-million-dollar maritime smuggling contract with private European syndicates. To move his illicit cargo through Chicago harbor without triggering federal customs inspections, Vance needs the master cryptographic routing keys stored in Romano Maritime's primary dispatch server."
