Chapter 10 - The Garden of Endless Light

One Year Later.

The warm golden summer sunshine poured over the sprawling, blooming rose gardens and sun-drenched stone terraces of the Romano family lakefront estate in Lake Forest, Illinois.

The dark memories of that cold rainy apartment, the broken window latch, and the terrifying threat had been permanently washed away by a year of profound healing, unstoppable success, and boundless love.

Romano Maritime Global was thriving under Luca’s direct executive leadership, expanding green zero-emission container shipping corridors across the Atlantic and establishing the Mila Hayes Foundation for Corporate Safety & Whistleblower Protection—a fifty-million-dollar permanent endowment providing free emergency housing, forensic cybersecurity defense, and legal advocacy for thousands of vulnerable corporate employees nationwide.

Bradley Vance had entered a formal guilty plea in federal court, receiving a mandatory sentence of Thirty-Five Years at the United States Penitentiary, Marion with zero eligibility for early parole. Commissioner Sterling was sentenced to twenty-two years at FCI Oxford.

Out on the soft green clover overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan, our new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby, was running with boundless, joyful energy, chasing a colorful beach ball across the grass under the cloudless blue sky.

Mila walked along the wide limestone terrace wearing an elegant white linen sundress, holding a silver tray with two tall glasses of freshly squeezed iced lemonade and warm berry tarts.

Her chestnut hair cascaded over her shoulders in soft, sunlit waves, her face radiant with pure, unclouded peace.

She stepped up to the cedar balustrade where Luca stood, dressed in a comfortable linen summer shirt and dark trousers, looking out over the sparkling expanse of the lake where white sailboats glided peacefully beneath the sun.

Mila set the tray onto the table, stepping up beside him, resting her small, warm hand gently over his large palm on the railing.

Luca turned, his slate-gray eyes softening with an ancient, breathtaking devotion that made her breath catch in her throat just as it had on the night of the text.

He reached out, wrapping his strong, protective arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his broad chest.

"What are you thinking about, my brilliant partner?" Luca whispered softly into the summer breeze, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against the curve of her neck.

Mila leaned back against his solid chest, listening to the strong, steady, miraculous rhythm of his heartbeat against her back.

"I was thinking about that rainy midnight one year ago," Mila smiled softly, turning in his embrace to look up into the dark gray eyes she loved with all her soul. "When I sent three drunk words into the dark, terrified that my life was over... and the most dangerous man in the city crossed an entire empire in ten minutes just to bring me home."

Luca smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile that cleared every dark shadow from his handsome face.

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond engagement ring that sparkled like the midday sun.

Luca took Mila’s delicate, trembling hand into his broad palm, sliding the ring onto her finger.

"You never needed to ask twice, Mila," Luca whispered softly, his deep voice thick with an eternal, unbreakable devotion. "I will come for you through fire, through storm, and through every shadow for the rest of our days."

Mila laughed through tears of pure, overwhelming joy, throwing her arms around his neck as Luca lifted her off her feet, sealing their future with a deep, passionate, and eternal kiss under the vast, cloudless blue sky.

Barnaby trotted up the porch steps, panting happily, resting his head against their knees as they stood united in the golden light.

The fear was burned to ash forever. The traitors were locked in concrete cages.

And in their place stood an unbreakable dynasty of truth, honor, sovereign protection, and a love standing eternal in the radiant, triumphant light of home.
