Chapter 6 - The Red Dress at The Drake
Saturday evening, 7:45 PM.
The Grand Gold Coast Ballroom of The Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was a spectacle of blinding, high-society luxury.
Seven French crystal chandeliers cast a radiant golden glow across five hundred black-tie guestsāprominent venture capitalists, city commissioners, federal judges, and international logistics tycoons. Towering floral arrangements of white orchids and silver eucalyptus lined the perimeter, while a live thirty-piece symphony orchestra played classical waltzes from the raised mezzanine.
At the center VIP head table sat forty-two-year-old Bradley Vance.
He looked immaculate and commanding in a bespoke midnight-blue Tom Ford tuxedo, holding a crystal flute of vintage Dom PĆ©rignon champagne, laughing boisterously with sixty-year-old City Commissioner Harold Sterling.
"To complete maritime dominance, Harold," Bradley Vance toasted arrogantly, clinking his crystal flute. "Tonight, the board ratifies our fifty-million-dollar acquisition of the Chicago terminal leases. Luca Romanoās little assistant will deliver the encryption codes to my courier by midnight, and Romano will be completely powerless to stop us."
Commissioner Sterling chuckled, adjusting his gold signet ring. "Romano has ruled this harbor for ten years. Itās about time someone with real political capital put him in his place."
At 8:15 PM, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the crystal podium at the front of the stage, his voice booming through the sound system:
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished civic leaders, and honored investors: Please welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Apex Logistics GlobalāMr. Bradley Vance!"
The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
Bradley Vance stood up, buttoned his tuxedo jacket, and strode up the carpeted stage stairs with the swagger of an emperor about to claim his crown.
He stepped behind the custom acrylic lectern, raising both hands to acknowledge the roaring crowd.
"Distinguished partners and honored colleagues," Bradley began with polished, charismatic warmth. "Tonight marks a historic milestone for the Great Lakes shipping corridors. Through our strategic consolidation, Apex Logistics has secured fifty million dollars in sovereign expansion capital, preparing our municipal ports for an unprecedented era of growthā"

The heavy double mahogany doors at the main entrance of the Grand Gold Coast Ballroom were thrown wide open with concussive, echoing force.
The entire grand ballroom fell into dead, breathless, paralyzed silence.
