Chapter 6 - A Home for Christmas Future

ONE YEAR LATER

The winter sun shone brightly over the snow-covered gardens of the Hawthorne Estate. The sound of joyful laughter echoed through the warm, beautifully decorated halls of the mansion.

It was Christmas Eve once again.

Inside the grand dining room, a magnificent fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood beside the roaring marble fireplace, covered in golden ornaments and glowing fairy lights. Beneath the tree sat dozens of wrapped presents.

At the head of the long mahogany dining table sat James Hawthorne.

He was no longer the lonely, stoic man who spent his Christmas Eves locking up an empty restaurant in silence. His face was full of life, warmth, and deep contentment.

To his right sat Grace.

Over the past twelve months, Grace had officially assumed her role as the Chairwoman of Vance Pharmaceuticals, completely restructuring the company into an ethical, community-focused healthcare leader. She had established a multi-million-dollar foundation providing emergency housing and legal support for single mothers across the state. She was polished, powerful, and deeply respected—yet her heart remained as gentle and pure as the night James had first met her.

And running around the table, wearing a festive red dress with a big velvet bow in her hair, was seven-year-old Chloe.

"Mommy! Mr. James! Look!" Chloe squealed happily, holding up a large gingerbread house she had decorated with the private chef. "It has a chimney and everything!"

James chuckled warmly, standing up from his seat and walking over to the little girl. He scooped Chloe up into his strong arms, making her giggle with delight.

"It's the most beautiful gingerbread house I've ever seen, Chloe," James said softly, bopping her nose gently. "You're getting better at baking every day."

"Can we save a piece for Santa?" Chloe asked, her big blue eyes shining with wonder.

"Of course we can," James promised, setting her down gently. "Go show Marcus in the living room; I think he wants to see it too."

"Yay!" Chloe cheered, running off down the hallway with her gingerbread creation.

James turned to look at Grace, who was standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the soft snow falling over the garden.

He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and resting his chin softly against her shoulder. Grace leaned back into his warm chest, feeling a deep sense of peace wash over her body.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" James whispered against her neck.

Grace turned in his arms, resting her hands against his lapels, looking up into his dark, loving eyes.

"I was just remembering last year," Grace admitted with a tender smile. "One year ago tonight, I was crouching on the floor of your restaurant, terrified, praying that my little girl would have enough to eat. I thought the world was completely dark."

James reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, velvet ring box.

He looked into Grace’s eyes, his expression filled with an intensity of emotion that made her heart skip a beat. He slowly dropped to one knee on the plush rug.

"You brought light back into this house, Grace," James said, his voice deep and thick with genuine devotion. "You and Chloe gave me a home when I thought I was destined to spend the rest of my life alone in the cold. I don't ever want to spend another day—or another Christmas—without you by my side."

He opened the box, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut diamond ring that caught the warm light of the fireplace.

"Grace Vance, will you marry me?" James asked softly.

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over Grace’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," Grace sobbed happily, dropping to her knees beside him and wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. "Yes, James! A thousand times yes!"

James slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a passionate, tender kiss as the warm light of the fireplace flickered around them.

Chloe ran back into the dining room, stopping mid-step when she saw them embracing on the rug. She clapped her small hands together, her face lighting up with absolute joy.

"Does this mean Mr. James is my daddy now?!" Chloe cheered, running over and throwing her arms around both of them.

James pulled Chloe into their embrace, holding his new family tightly against his chest.

May you like

"Yes, Chloe," James whispered, kissing the top of the little girl's head, then kissing Grace’s lips once more. "Forever."

Outside, the snow fell softly over Chicago, but inside the mansion, there was only warmth, love, and the everlasting light of a family finally made whole.
