Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The morning after Christmas, the snow lay thick over the streets of Chicago, transforming the city into a postcard of white and glass.

Inside the executive boardroom of Hawthorne Enterprise's global headquarters on Michigan Avenue, the atmosphere was anything but festive. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan, but James Hawthorne was staring intently at the leather-bound dossier resting on his massive mahogany desk.

Sitting across from him was Marcus Cole, his head of private security and closest confidant for twelve years.

"Are you certain about this, Marcus?" James asked, his voice cold and analytical.

"100%, James," Marcus replied, leaning forward and tapping a photo in the dossier. "Grace Braddock isn't just an ordinary cleaning lady who applied through an agency. Her full name is Grace Vance Braddock. She is the disinherited daughter of the late Richard Vance."

James’s hand tightened around his silver pen. "Richard Vance? The founder of Vance Pharmaceutical Logistics?"

"The very same," Marcus confirmed. "Four years ago, when Richard Vance passed away, his estate was worth over three hundred million dollars. However, his second wife—Grace’s stepmother, Eleanor Vance—and Eleanor's son, Julian, produced a revised will that stripped Grace of her inheritance and left her completely penniless."

James frowned, his sharp mind connecting the dots. "And Grace didn't contest the will?"

"She couldn't," Marcus explained grimly. "Julian Vance framed her for corporate embezzlement. They threatened to have her sent to a federal prison and have child protective services strip her of custody over Chloe if she didn't sign away her rights to the estate and leave Illinois. She signed everything to save her daughter, changed her surname to Braddock, and went off the grid."

James leaned back in his leather chair, staring out at the snow-covered skyline. His mind raced back to the image of Grace kneeling on the cold tile floor of his restaurant, her hands worn from chemicals, quietly enduring hardship just to protect the little blonde girl sleeping on a bench.

He knew what it felt like to be stripped of everything by greedy, ruthless relatives. After his own father died, James had fought a vicious war against his uncles to retain control of his family’s culinary and hospitality empire. He had built Hawthorne Enterprise into a billion-dollar conglomerate through sheer willpower, tactical intelligence, and unyielding strength.

"Where are Eleanor and Julian Vance now?" James asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

"They are currently attempting to finalize a merger with a European investment group," Marcus answered. "If the merger goes through next month, Vance Pharmaceuticals will be swallowed up, and Julian will walk away with over two hundred million dollars in cash. But there’s a catch."

"What catch?"

"Under the original terms of Richard Vance’s family trust, if it is proven that the revised will was executed under duress or fraud, the entire estate reverts instantly to Richard’s biological heir." Marcus looked directly into James's eyes. "Which means Grace is actually the rightful owner of Vance Pharmaceuticals."

A slow, calculating smile spread across James Hawthorne’s face.

"Marcus," James commanded softly. "Prepare my car. And have my personal legal team—led by Victoria Vance—meet me at my private residence in Gold Coast."

"What are you planning, James?"

"Grace doesn't belong in the shadows cleaning floorboards while criminals feast on her father's legacy," James said, standing up and buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. "I'm bringing her into my home. And then, we are going to tear Julian Vance’s empire down to the ground."
