Chapter 5 - Confrontation at the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was illuminated by dozens of gold chandeliers. Over five hundred of Chicago's wealthiest socialites, politicians, and corporate titans gathered for the annual winter gala.

At the center of the room stood Julian Vance—thirty-two years old, arrogant, wearing an expensive designer tuxedo—alongside his mother, Eleanor, who was dripping in diamonds. They were clinking champagne glasses with European investors, celebrating what they believed was their final victory.

"To the future of Vance Pharmaceuticals," Julian toasted with a smug smile. "By midnight, the paperwork will be signed, and our expansion into Europe becomes official."

Suddenly, the grand brass doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing across the silent room.

"Announcing Mr. James Hawthorne... and Miss Grace Vance Braddock."

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

Julian turned his head toward the entrance, his smug smile instantly freezing. His champagne glass slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a hundred pieces.

Walking down the grand staircase, hand-in-hand, were James Hawthorne and Grace.

Grace looked breathtaking. The emerald-green silk gown draped perfectly over her slender frame, highlighting her radiant skin and delicate features. The diamond necklace sparkled beneath the chandeliers, but it was her eyes that held the room captive—clear, powerful, and utterly devoid of fear.

Beside her, James Hawthorne walked like a monarch inspecting his kingdom, his dark eyes fixed dead on Julian Vance.

"Grace?" Eleanor gasped, clutching her son’s arm, her face turning pale as paper. "How... how is she here?! Who is that man with her?!"

"That’s James Hawthorne," Julian whispered, terror creeping into his voice. "The billionaire... What is she doing with him?!"

Before Julian could move, James and Grace glided across the ballroom floor, the crowd parting around them like the Red Sea. They stopped three feet away from the trembling mother and son.

"Julian. Eleanor," Grace said, her voice smooth, clear, and ringing with absolute authority. "It's been a long time."

"Grace..." Julian stammered, trying desperately to regain his composure in front of the surrounding reporters and investors. "What is the meaning of this outrage? You were banned from corporate events four years ago! Security—"

"Security isn't coming, Julian," James Hawthorne interrupted, his low voice cutting through the room like a sharp blade. "Because I own the security firm managing this hotel. And more importantly, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department is currently waiting outside in the lobby."

Eleanor let out a pathetic whimper. "What are you talking about?!"

Victoria Vance stepped forward from behind James, holding a certified court order bound in red ribbon.

"As of seven o'clock tonight, Mr. Vance," Victoria declared loudly so the surrounding investors could hear every word, "the Chancery Court has issued an emergency freeze on all corporate assets of Vance Pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, federal arrest warrants have been unsealed for Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance on charges of grand larceny, probate fraud, and corporate extortion."

"This is absurd!" Julian screamed, his face flushing red with rage. "She signed away her rights four years ago! She’s an embezzler!"

"She signed under duress after you threatened her child," Grace spoke up, stepping directly into Julian’s personal space, her chin raised high. "And the original Swiss trust records have been verified. My father left everything to me, Julian. You have nothing."

Two uniformed federal agents walked into the ballroom, stepping past the shocked crowd.

"Julian Vance, Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest," the lead agent announced, stepping forward with handcuffs held open.

As the agents slapped the cold steel cuffs onto Julian’s wrists, the arrogant man broke down into frantic, pathetic pleas. "Grace! Please! We’re family! Talk to him! Don't let them do this to me!"

Grace looked at her stepbrother—the man who had condemned her to poverty and tried to steal her child’s future—and felt nothing but profound, cleansing detachment.

"You took four years of my life, Julian," Grace said softly. "You won't take another second."

The crowd watched in awe as Julian and Eleanor were led away in handcuffs, their reputation and empire ruined forever in front of the entire city.
