Chapter 4 - The High-Society Transformation

The Hawthorne Estate in Gold Coast was a stunning French Neoclassical mansion surrounded by manicured gardens and soaring stone walls.
Inside, grand marble staircases, crystal chandeliers, and museum-quality artwork adorned every room. Yet, despite its luxury, the mansion had felt cold and empty for years—a place where James slept between eighteen-hour workdays.
That changed the moment Chloe’s small snow boots clicked across the polished marble foyer.
Within three days, the vast, silent mansion was alive with warmth. Chloe’s cheerful laughter echoed down the long hallways as she played hide-and-seek with the friendly house staff, who instantly adored the polite, bright-eyed little girl. James’s personal chef prepared custom three-course meals every evening, making sure Chloe had plenty of her favorite treats.
For Grace, living in the mansion felt surreal. James had assigned her a breathtaking guest suite overlooking the lake, complete with a private sitting room, fireplace, and walk-in wardrobe.
On Thursday morning, Victoria Vance—Chicago’s most feared forensic trust attorney—arrived at the estate, accompanied by a team of high-end stylists and tailors hired personally by James.
"We are attending the Annual Chicago Business Gala on Saturday night," Victoria announced, laying out thick legal files on the coffee table in Grace’s sitting room. "Julian and Eleanor Vance are the co-hosts of the event. They believe they are about to announce their two-hundred-million-dollar European merger to the city's elite."
Grace sat on the velvet sofa, dressed in a soft cream cashmere sweater provided by James. Her hands brushed over the legal documents. "What are we going to do at the gala?"
James stepped into the room, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his presence commanding immediate attention.
"We are going to crash their party, Grace," James said with a quiet, lethal smile. "Victoria has filed a formal petition in the Cook County Chancery Division to freeze all asset transfers of Vance Pharmaceuticals, citing fraud, forgery, and grand larceny."
"Julian will deny everything," Grace said, her heart fluttering with anxiety. "He destroyed the original trust documents."
"He thinks he did," Victoria corrected with a confident smirk. "What Julian didn't realize is that your father kept a duplicate copy of his true last will and testament in a private safety deposit box in Switzerland—one that required your biometric verification to unlock. Two days ago, James’s security team flew to Zurich with your consent records and retrieved the original document."
Grace gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. "My father’s real will?"
"Yes," Victoria confirmed. "You are the sole owner of ninety percent of Vance Pharmaceuticals. Eleanor and Julian received nothing but a modest annual annuity—which they forfeited the moment they committed fraud."
James walked over to Grace, extending his hand to pull her up from the sofa.
He guided her toward a tall mirror in the corner of the room, where a magnificent emerald-green silk gown hung from a velvet rack, alongside a glittering diamond necklace.

"On Saturday night, Grace," James murmured, standing behind her, his reflection meeting hers in the glass. "You will no longer be the invisible woman cleaning floors in the dark. You will walk into that ballroom as the rightful heir to the Vance legacy. And I will be right by your side."
Grace looked at her reflection, then at the powerful, handsome man standing behind her. The timid, broken woman she had been three days ago began to fade, replaced by a surge of fierce, unshakeable strength.
