Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in Gold Coast

An hour later, a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the curb outside the rundown apartment building in West Pilsen.

Grace was standing in the cramped hallway near the front entrance, holding a small cardboard box containing her and Chloe's few belongings. Her landlord had given her until noon to clear out after she fell two weeks behind on rent. She had planned to take Chloe to a women's shelter downtown while she searched for an extra shift.

When the front door of the building opened, James Hawthorne walked in.

He looked imposing in his long black wool overcoat, his dark hair neatly styled, his tall frame filling the narrow, dingy hallway. Two security guards stood respectfully behind him at the entrance.

"James?" Grace gasped, nearly dropping her box. "What... what are you doing here?"

Chloe peeked out from behind Grace's legs, her eyes lighting up when she recognized the man who had fed her gingerbread cookies on Christmas Eve. "Mr. James!"

James dropped to one knee, a gentle smile warming his sharp features. "Hello, little one. How are you feeling today?"

"I'm good!" Chloe cheered. "Mommy said we're going on an adventure."

James looked up at Grace, his expression turning serious yet warm. He stood up and took the heavy cardboard box out of her hands, passing it seamlessly to one of his guards.

"Your adventure starts now, Grace," James said smoothly. "Pack whatever else you have. You and Chloe are coming with me."

Grace shrank back slightly, her defensive instincts kicking in. "James, I can't accept charity. I appreciate what you did for us at the restaurant, but I pay my own way. I'm looking for a new place today—"

"This isn't charity, Grace," James interrupted gently, stepping closer until he was standing just inches from her. "It’s protection."

Grace froze. Her hazel eyes widened with a mix of shock and sudden fear. "Protection? From what?"

"I know who you are, Grace," James whispered, his dark eyes searching her face. "I know about Richard Vance. I know about Eleanor. And I know what Julian did to you four years ago."

Color drained from Grace’s face. She felt as though the floor beneath her feet had given way. "How... how do you know that name?"

"Because I make it my business to know everything that happens in this city," James replied calmly. "Julian Vance is currently looking for you. He found out yesterday that a court audit is scheduled for the family trust next month, and he needs your signature on a final liability release to execute his European deal. If he finds you in this state, he will force you to sign away your life forever."

Grace trembled, pulling Chloe tighter against her side. "He threatened to take Chloe away from me, James... He told me he had judges in his pocket..."

"He doesn't have me in his pocket," James said, reaching out to gently clasp Grace's trembling hand in his own warm, strong grip. "In this city, Julian Vance is a minor player. I am not. As long as you are under my roof, no one—not Julian, not Eleanor, and no crooked judge—will ever touch you or your daughter again."

Tears welled in Grace’s eyes. For four long, agonizing years, she had fought the world alone, carrying the crushing weight of fear and poverty on her fragile shoulders. Looking into James’s firm, unwavering eyes, she felt something she hadn’t felt in years.

Safety.

"All right," Grace whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "We'll come with you."

Ten minutes later, the Maybach drove away from West Pilsen, carrying Grace and Chloe toward the grand, iron-gated mansion in Chicago’s elite Gold Coast district.
