Chapter 7 - The Final Verdict

The federal trial of Evelyn Vance was swift, brutal, and entirely transparent.

With the complete forensic breakdown of the toxic compounds, the hidden security camera footage from the nursery, the financial audit of her gambling debts, and the forged contingency wills recovered from her safety deposit box, the prosecution presented an airtight case of attempted murder, financial fraud, and elder/family exploitation.

Sitting at the defense table, Evelyn looked a decade older, her polished facade completely stripped away by the harsh reality of a federal courtroom. Her high-priced defense attorneys didn't even bother mounting a substantive defense; the evidence was simply too overwhelming, too damning, and too thoroughly documented by my security team.

When the jury returned with their verdict after less than two hours of deliberation, the foreman’s voice rang clear across the silent courtroom: Guilty on all counts.

The federal judge didn't hold back during sentencing. Citing premeditated cruelty, betrayal of trust, and attempted homicide against a recovering postpartum mother, he handed down a maximum sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security federal correctional facility.

As the bailiffs led Evelyn away in chains, she looked across the courtroom one last time, her eyes locking onto mine. There was no defiance left in her gaze—only the chilling realization that she had tried to bite the hand of a beast that owned the shadows, and the beast had simply swallowed her whole.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply turned my attention back to Isabella, who sat beside me holding little Luca in her arms, her head resting peacefully against my shoulder.

The nightmare was finally, truly over.
