Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The following morning dawned gray and rainy, the heavy clouds pressing down against the sprawling glass and stone architecture of the mansion.
In the nursery, the routine played out like clockwork.
Evelyn stepped quietly through the doorway, her handbag clutched tightly in her hand. She checked the hallway to make certain it was empty, pulled out the signal jammer, plugged it into the wall outlet, and reached into her bag for the amber vial.
She unscrewed the dropper, walked over to the tray containing Isabella’s morning tonic, and leaned down to administer the drops.
"Going somewhere, Evelyn?"
The cold, flat voice echoed through the quiet nursery like a gunshot.
Evelyn screamed, dropping the glass vial. It shattered against the hardwood floor, dark amber liquid splashing across her expensive shoes.
She whipped around. I was standing in the doorway, blocking the exit entirely. Behind me stood two federal marshals in dark tactical gear, their badges gleaming coldly in the dim morning light.
"V-Vincent?!" Evelyn stammered, her face turning the color of ash, her hands flying to her mouth. "What... what is the meaning of this?! Let me past—!"
"You forgot rule number one of my world, Evelyn," I stepped forward into the room, my presence towering over her. "Never play a game in a house where you don't even own the walls."
"Agent Miller, arrest her," I commanded without raising my voice.
The two federal marshals moved with swift, practiced efficiency. Heavy steel handcuffs clicked tightly around Evelyn’s wrists before she could even draw another breath.
"This is an outrage! I am her mother!" Evelyn shrieked, thrashing against the marshals as they dragged her toward the hallway. "Isabella! Isabella, help me! Your husband is insane! He’s arresting your mother!"
Isabella appeared at the end of the hallway, walking steadily, her posture strong and resolute. She didn't look panicked, nor did she look confused. She looked at her mother with a profound, heartbreaking sorrow.

"I saw the security footage, Mom," Isabella said quietly, her voice steady. "Vincent showed me everything last night."
Evelyn stopped struggling. The color drained completely from her face, and her mouth hung open in silent, absolute horror as she realized the game was entirely over.
