Chapter 2 - Unraveling the Motive

I watched the footage on loop, letting every second burn into my memory like acid.
Why? What could possibly drive a mother to systematically poison her own daughter while she was fighting to recover from a near-fatal childbirth?
I picked up my secure phone and dialed Marcus, my most trusted lieutenant and chief investigator. "Marcus. Drop everything. I need a complete, deep-dive background check on Evelyn Vance—every financial record, every property deed, every past associate, going back thirty years. I want it on my desk in two hours."
While Marcus went to work, I replayed the video, watching Evelyn carefully wipe down the dropper and place the amber vial back into the hidden pocket of her bag. As she turned toward the nursery monitor—the very camera that mysteriously went dead every morning—she reached up and jammed a portable signal blocker into the wall outlet right beneath the baseboard.
So that was how she managed the blackout. A high-frequency electronic jammer, small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, designed to disrupt local Wi-Fi frequencies precisely when she executed her daily routine.
By noon, Marcus stood in front of my desk, sliding a heavy manila folder down onto the wood. His face was grim, tight with suppressed fury.
"You're not going to believe this, boss," Marcus said, his voice low. "Evelyn wasn't just a doting mother. Ten years ago, before Isabella met you, Evelyn was heavily entangled in high-stakes underground gambling debts in St. Louis. She lost everything—her home, her savings, her social standing."
"Go on," I commanded, my eyes locked on the file.
"She tried to force Isabella into signing over a massive trust left by her paternal grandfather—a trust worth over eight million dollars that was locked until Isabella turned twenty-five or married," Marcus continued. "Isabella refused. She found out her mother was stealing from her college fund and cut her off completely. Evelyn vanished for years, only to reappear out of nowhere the exact week Isabella gave birth to Luca."
The grand puzzle dissolved into crystal-clear clarity.

Evelyn hadn't come back to help her daughter. She had come back to finish the job. If Isabella died slowly under the guise of post-delivery complications, Evelyn—as the primary next of kin and grandmother—would legally assume control of Isabella's estate and the multi-million-dollar trust fund, leaving me and little Luca completely out in the cold.
She thought she was playing a game against a grieving, distracted husband. She didn't realize she had just walked into a slaughterhouse.
