Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

The digital clock glowed 10:15 AM. Across the city at Whitmore Tower, the boardroom doors were sealed, and the corporate execution of Adrien Whitmore was officially underway.

Even lying motionless in the hospital bed, I could visualize the scene with absolute clarity. The forty-story glass skyscraper overlooking Lake Michigan, the mahogany conference table surrounded by aging board members who valued quarterly dividends over human life, and Julian standing at the podium, playing the grieving brother while systematically carving up my empire.

In the private suite, the afternoon sun shifted across the floorboards, casting long, pale geometric shadows through the vertical blinds. The hospital had grown unusually quiet; Julian had apparently cleared out the entire third-floor wing under the pretext of "confidential family privacy," dismissing all regular nurses and leaving only a single rotation of compromised staff managed by Dr. Sterling.

At 11:30 AM, the door quietly unlatched.

It wasn't Julian this time, nor was it Nora.

The soft, hesitant click of the handle preceded the entry of a figure wrapped in a dark trench coat. As the door clicked shut, the visitor dropped the hood, revealing Marcus’s second-in-command, a seasoned operative named Sarah Vance—no relation to the corrupt doctor—who had spent ten years embedded in forensic financial investigations before joining my security detail.

She walked swiftly to the side of the bed, her eyes scanning the corridor through the small glass window in the door before leaning down close to my ear.

"Boss," Sarah whispered, her breath brushing my cheek. "The board vote just concluded. Julian was unanimously appointed interim CEO by proxy of the fraudulent medical declaration. He just signed the emergency asset-transfer authorization forms fifteen minutes ago."

"Did he sign the European liquidity release?" I asked, my throat-mic picking up the precise cadence of my quiet subvocalization.

"Every single page," Sarah nodded, a thin, predatory smile touching her lips. "He also authorized the immediate liquidation of your private real estate holdings in London and Zurich to fund a hostile takeover of a shipping rival. He walked right into every trap we set."

"And Victoria?"

"She's downstairs in the executive lobby giving an interview to the Chicago Tribune," Sarah sneered softly. "Crying on cue, talking about setting up a charitable foundation in your honor with the proceeds of your estate. It's sickening."

"Greed always exposes itself given enough rope," I replied, staring blankly at the acoustic ceiling tiles. "Is the federal task force in position?"

"Agent Miller and his team have the warrants signed by Judge Hawthorne," Sarah confirmed, pulling a small encrypted flash drive from her pocket and laying it discreetly beside the bed tray. "The moment you give the signal, the FBI will simultaneously raid the boardroom at Whitmore Tower, freeze every account Julian touched, and arrest Dr. Sterling for falsifying medical records and administering a controlled neurotoxin."

"Hold off on the raid for one more hour," I instructed quietly.

Sarah frowned, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "Boss, why wait? They've committed the felonies. We have the audio, the signed documents, and the bank routing numbers."

"Because," I replied, my mind flashing to the quiet housekeeper who had wiped my brow with a warm towel while everyone else circled like vultures, "there is one loose end in this hospital that needs to be secured before the storm hits."

"Who? Sterling?"

"No," I said, my voice cold and absolute. "Nora Hayes."
