Chapter 31 - THE RHYTHM OF THE CITY

As Friday evening descended upon Chicago once more, painting the sky in magnificent strokes of amber, violet, and deep indigo, the city hummed below with a vibrant, unyielding energy.
Inside the executive penthouse, the atmosphere was serene and absolute. The manila envelope containing his father's psychological reports was gone—shredded and recycled into pulp days ago, its dark history neutralized and converted into something clean and useful.
Jonathan and Nora stood together on the private balcony, wrapped in heavy wool coats against the brisk autumn wind, watching the city lights flicker on across the vast expanse of Lake Michigan.
"Are you ready for the foundation's grand opening gala tomorrow night?" Nora asked softly, resting her head against his shoulder.
"I've faced hostile boardrooms, federal investigations, and corporate assassination plots," Jonathan smiled, wrapping his arm securely around her waist. "I think I can survive a room full of philanthropists and city council members."
Nora laughed—a bright, melodic sound that rose above the distant hum of the traffic below.
