Chapter 19 - THE PROSECUTOR'S AUDIT
High above the city, in a secure conference room on the seventieth floor, Victor Vance sat across from Jonathan, reviewing the final federal liquidation schedules for Victoria Whitmore’s offshore accounts.
Despite sharing a surname, Victor had spent his entire career operating in the pristine, unyielding sunlight of public prosecution, a stark contrast to the shadowy corporate warfare that had nearly destroyed the Whitmore family. Yet, over the past three months, a deep, respectful alliance had forged between the two men—an alliance born of shared resolve and mutual respect.
"The asset recovery is complete," Victor stated, closing his leather folio and sliding it across the table. "Every dollar Victoria siphoned from the research grants has been successfully repatriated and redirected into the city's public health endowment."
"And her legal standing?" Jonathan asked, taking a sip of his black coffee.
" airtight," Victor replied with a cold, precise edge. "Her co-conspirators in the offshore banking sector are flipping to secure reduced sentences. She'll spend the next decade reflecting on her ambition from behind federal bars. There will be no backroom deals, Jonathan. The chapter is closed."
Jonathan nodded slowly, leaning back in his chair. "You know, Victor, when you first launched this investigation, I thought you were just another ambitious prosecutor looking to make a name by tearing down a dynasty."
"And now?" Victor raised an eyebrow, a faint, ironic smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"Now I realize you were the only person in Chicago with enough backbone to help me clean house," Jonathan admitted, raising his coffee cup in a silent, respectful toast. "I owe you a debt of gratitude."
"Save your gratitude for the taxpayers, Jonathan," Victor chuckled, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Just keep running a clean corporation, and I won't have to visit your seventy-fifth floor with a federal search warrant ever again."
