Chapter 9 - Fire and Retribution

Victor didn't just bring a sniper rifle to the meeting; he brought an entire army of ghosts.

Hidden explosive charges detonated completely around the perimeter of the warehouse, dropping massive steel shipping containers onto Dante's SUVs.

Victor's loyal, elite strike team poured in through the shattered skylights on rappelling lines, opening fire on the Falcone mercenaries.

The noise was absolutely deafening, a horrific symphony of screaming metal, shattered glass, and continuous gunfire.

I threw myself flat onto the freezing concrete floor, covering my ears as bullets sparked against the floorboards just inches from my head.

Victor leaped from the catwalk, landing heavily on the hood of the remaining SUV.

Despite his gunshot wound, he moved like a pure, unchained demon.

He dispatched two of Dante's guards with brutal, terrifying hand-to-hand efficiency, breaking bones with sickening crunches.

Dante scrambled out from behind the ruined vehicle, his silver cane discarded, holding a massive silver revolver.

He aimed the weapon directly at Victor's back as the mafia boss fought another guard.

"Victor, behind you!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, scrambling to my knees.

Victor spun around, but the wounded shoulder slowed his reaction time by a deadly fraction of a second.

Dante fired.

The bullet grazed Victor's thigh, dropping the massive crime boss to one knee.

Dante laughed hysterically, walking slowly toward Victor to deliver the final, executing shot to his head.

"The Moretti empire falls tonight, and the Falcone bloodline dies with it!" Dante declared triumphantly.

I didn't think.

I didn't hesitate, and I didn't let fear paralyze me anymore.

I pulled the heavy black handgun Victor had given me out of my coat pocket.

I raised it with both hands, pointing the barrel directly at the man who had ordered the murder of my mother and my child.

I squeezed the trigger.

The recoil completely knocked me backward onto the concrete, my wrists screaming in sudden pain.

Dante froze.

The silver revolver slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the warehouse floor.

He looked down in absolute, stunned disbelief at the dark red stain blooming rapidly across his pristine white cashmere coat.

He turned his head slowly, looking at me with wide, terrified eyes.

"Elena..." he whispered, confusing me for my mother in his final moments.

Dante Falcone collapsed onto the floor, completely dead before his face even hit the concrete.

The remaining Falcone mercenaries saw their boss fall and immediately dropped their weapons, raising their hands in total surrender.

The warehouse went deathly silent, the only sound being the crackle of a small fire burning near the destroyed SUVs.

I dropped the gun, my entire body shaking violently as the reality of taking a human life crashed over me.

Victor limped over to me, kicking the gun far away before dropping to his knees and pulling me fiercely into his arms.
