Chapter 6 - Blood on the Snow

I locked the heavy steel door of the panic room, trapping myself in the windowless bathroom with my daughter.

Lily was crying now, completely terrified by the sudden tension and the loud, echoing alarms.

I sat on the cold tile floor, rocking her back and forth, holding the heavy black handgun with trembling, sweaty fingers.

Outside the thick door, all hell was breaking loose in the beautiful glass penthouse.

I could hear the deafening roar of automatic gunfire, the shattering of expensive glass, and the heavy thud of falling bodies.

Victor was fighting a one-man war against highly trained assassins to protect a child that wasn't even his.

"Hush, sweetie, mommy is right here," I whispered frantically to Lily, tears streaming down my face.

Suddenly, a massive, violent impact struck the steel door of the bathroom.

I jumped, leveling the handgun directly at the center of the door, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"Hannah!" Victor's rough, agonizing voice called out from the other side.

"Open the door, it is me!"

I scrambled to my feet, fumbling with the heavy deadbolt, and threw the door open.

Victor stumbled into the small room, his expensive suit shredded, his breathing heavy and erratic.

He was entirely covered in blood, but my terrified eyes immediately locked onto his left shoulder.

A dark, rapidly spreading crimson stain was soaking through his torn white shirt.

"You are shot!" I gasped, pulling him completely into the room and locking the door behind him again.

"It is just a graze," he grunted, sliding down the tiled wall to sit on the floor, leaving a streak of blood behind him.

"That is a lot of blood for a graze, Victor," I cried, placing Lily safely in the empty bathtub.

I ripped a clean white towel from the rack and pressed it firmly against his bleeding shoulder.

Victor winced, his dark eyes closing briefly as the intense pain washed over him.

"The perimeter is secure for now," he breathed heavily, resting his head against the cold tile.

"I killed the six men they sent, but Dante will send a dozen more by sunrise."

I applied as much pressure as I could to the wound, my hands shaking violently as the white towel turned bright red.

"Why are you doing this, Victor?" I sobbed, completely overwhelmed by the horrific violence of his world.

"You don't owe my mother this much blood."

Victor opened his eyes, looking at me with an intensity that completely paralyzed my heart.

"I am not doing this for a ghost, Hannah," he whispered, his large, bloody hand reaching up to gently touch my tear-stained cheek.

"I am doing this because you walked into my house in the middle of a storm, willing to sacrifice everything for your child."

He swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a low, emotional rumble.

"I have lived in the darkness for twenty-five years, and you are the first true light I have seen."

I stared into the eyes of the ruthless crime boss, realizing with terrifying clarity that I was no longer just a job to him.

We were bound together now by blood, survival, and a dangerous, undeniable connection.
