Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gates

The deafening roar of the explosion shattered the fragile silence of the mansion.
Thick plumes of gray smoke immediately began pouring through the massive mahogany front doors.
I instinctively threw my body over Lily's stroller, shielding my sick baby from the falling crystal shards of the shattered chandelier.
Victor Moretti did not even flinch at the sound of the blast.
His dark eyes remained locked on the silver locket dangling from my daughter's neck.
Another thunderous boom echoed from the front lawn, followed by the terrifying staccato rhythm of automatic gunfire.
"They did not come for me," Victor repeated, his voice cutting through the chaos with chilling clarity.
"They came for her."
Panic seized my chest, squeezing my lungs until I could barely draw a breath.
"Who are they?" I screamed over the sound of bullets ripping through the expensive artwork on the walls.
Victor did not answer my question.
He grabbed my arm with a grip that felt like solid iron and pulled me toward the grand staircase.
"Stay behind me, Hannah, and do not let go of that stroller," he commanded with absolute authority.
The private doctor, who had been examining Lily just moments before, scrambled to follow us.
Before the doctor could take three steps, the front windows imploded in a shower of deadly glass.
A masked man in dark tactical gear stepped through the broken window, raising a heavy assault rifle.
Victor drew a sleek black pistol from his shoulder holster with lightning speed.
He fired two shots without even breaking his stride, dropping the intruder instantly.
I squeezed my eyes shut, my entire body trembling as the smell of gunpowder filled the air.
Lily began to cry, a weak, raspy sound that broke my heart into a million pieces.
"My baby is too sick for this!" I sobbed, pushing the stroller desperately as we ran down a long, dimly lit corridor.
"If we do not get underground right now, her fever will be the least of your worries," Victor growled, his eyes scanning every shadow.
We reached a massive bookshelf at the end of the hallway.
Victor pressed his hand against a hidden biometric scanner disguised as a wooden panel.
A heavy mechanical click echoed in the wall, and the entire bookshelf swung open to reveal a dark, descending concrete stairwell.
"Go down, quickly," he ordered, shoving me gently toward the steps.
I carefully lifted Lily out of her stroller, wrapping the thick woolen blankets tightly around her burning little body.
I abandoned the stroller and hurried down the cold, steep stairs.
Victor followed right behind me, sealing the heavy steel door just as another explosion rocked the floorboards above us.
We were plunged into total darkness for a terrifying second before emergency fluorescent lights flickered on.
We stood in a sprawling underground bunker, lined with security monitors and weapons caches.
I collapsed onto a leather couch in the center of the room, clutching my feverish daughter to my chest.
"You are going to tell me exactly what is going on," I demanded, glaring at the most feared man in New York.
Victor slowly holstered his weapon, his gaze lingering on the silver locket resting against Lily's blanket.

"Your mother was not just Elena Rossi," Victor said quietly, the coldness finally leaving his voice.
"She was the sole heir to the Falcone crime syndicate, and your daughter is the last of that bloodline."
