Chapter 3 - The Tunnels of the Past

I sat frozen on the leather couch, trying to process the magnitude of Victor's confession.
The feared boss of the Moretti family had loved my mother, a woman I thought was just a simple, hardworking waitress.
Before I could ask another question, a loud, metallic alarm began blaring from the security console.
Victor rushed to the monitors, his broad shoulders tensing beneath his ruined black suit jacket.
"They have breached the mansion's main floor," Victor announced grimly, typing rapidly on the keyboard.
"My men are holding the grand staircase, but they are vastly outnumbered by Dante's mercenaries."
He turned to me, his dark eyes burning with an intense, terrifying urgency.
"We cannot stay in this bunker," he declared, moving toward the far wall of the concrete room.
"Dante brought thermite explosives, and they will eventually burn through the steel door at the top of the stairs."
"Where can we possibly go?" I asked, standing up and wrapping the blankets tightly around Lily's sleeping form.
The medication had already started to work, and her breathing was finally becoming steady and even.
Victor pressed his palm against a blank section of the concrete wall, triggering a hidden mechanism.
A large section of the wall slid backward and to the side, revealing a dark, narrow tunnel that smelled of damp earth and old brick.
"During the Prohibition era, this mansion belonged to a bootlegger who built tunnels leading directly into the city's subway system," Victor explained.
He grabbed a heavy tactical flashlight and a spare ammunition magazine from the weapons cache.
"We are going to walk through the dark until we reach the abandoned City Hall station," he instructed.
I looked into the pitch-black abyss of the tunnel, a deep, primal fear twisting in my stomach.
"I don't know anything about this world, Victor," I whispered, my voice trembling with raw vulnerability.
"I just clean offices to pay for baby formula."
Victor walked over to me, stopping mere inches away, his towering presence surprisingly comforting.
"You are Elena's daughter," he said softly, looking deeply into my terrified eyes.
"You have the blood of survivors in your veins, and you are stronger than you realize."
He gently touched the top of Lily's head, checking her temperature with the back of his large hand.
"Her fever is breaking," he noted, a faint, genuine smile touching his rugged features for the first time.
"Now, keep her close to your chest, stay completely silent, and follow my footsteps exactly."
We stepped into the dark, suffocating tunnel just as a massive explosion shook the bunker behind us.
The hidden concrete door slid shut automatically, plunging us into the damp, freezing darkness.

Victor switched on the flashlight, the bright beam slicing through the thick, dusty air of the underground passage.
I held my baby tightly, completely leaving my old life behind and stepping blindly into a mafia war.
