Chapter 8 - The Siege of Pier 42The salt-heavy air of Pier 42 smelled of diesel, rust, and impending bloodshed.

The massive corrugated steel warehouse loomed against the dark, churning waters of the harbor like a concrete monolith. Inside, under the harsh glare of flickering halogen lights, Marcus Santoro and Victor Vance paced back and forth across the concrete floor, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries cradling assault rifles.
"He'll come," Marcus laughed nervously, checking his watch for the third time. "A man doesn't risk his entire criminal empire for a stray maid unless he's gone completely soft. Once we force him to sign the asset transfer papers, we put a bullet in his head, take the girl as collateral, and run the city ourselves."
"And if he doesn't come?" one of the mercenaries grunted.
"Then we burn the warehouse with the girl inside and send her ashes to Moretti as a reminder," Victor sneered.
CRASH.
The massive steel roll-up door at the front of the warehouse didn't just open—it exploded inward, crumpled like paper as a black armored SUV smashed straight through the industrial locks, sliding across the wet concrete in a screech of burning rubber before slamming to a halt against a stack of wooden crates.
The mercenaries scattered, shouting curses, raising their assault rifles toward the vehicle.
The driver's side door swung open, and Lorenzo Moretti stepped out into the harsh light. He wasn't running. He walked with the slow, terrifying composure of an executioner stepping onto a scaffold, his hands empty and visible at his sides.
"Marcus! Victor!" Lorenzo’s voice echoed off the metal walls, commanding instant silence. "You wanted an audience. Here I am."
Marcus grinned viciously, stepping forward from behind a stack of shipping containers with his pistol raised toward Lorenzo’s chest. "Smart choice, Lorenzo! Drop your weapon and kick it across the floor. Where are the asset transfer deeds?"
"I don't carry deeds in my pocket, Marcus," Lorenzo replied smoothly, taking another step forward. "You want my empire? You have to take it from my hands."
"Oh, we will," Marcus snarled. "But first—where's the little brat and her mother? We want insurance."
"Right here," a cool, steady voice echoed from the elevated catwalk above the shipping containers.
Marcus, Victor, and every mercenary in the warehouse whipped their heads upward.
Standing on the metal catwalk, bathed in the amber glow of a security light, was Elena. She held a heavy industrial flare in one hand, its bright red smoke billowing violently into the ceiling rafters. Beside her stood Nolan Reyes, holding a suppressed sniper rifle aimed directly down at Marcus Santoro’s head.
"You—!" Marcus stammered in disbelief. "How did you—?"
"You forgot, Marcus," Elena called down, her voice ringing clear and strong through the cavernous warehouse. "I managed the security architecture of this entire district. Every blind spot, every emergency hatch, every automated sprinkler system..."
Elena dropped the burning red flare straight down onto a puddle of fuel oil below the catwalk.
WHOOSH.
Flames erupted instantly across the floor, cutting a wall of fire between the mercenaries and the center of the warehouse. Panic broke out instantly among the hired guns.
Before Marcus could raise his weapon to fire at the catwalk, Lorenzo moved with lightning speed. He drew his Sig Sauer from his holster, firing three rapid shots that knocked the weapons out of the hands of the closest mercenaries.
Simultaneously, from the shadows of the roof rafters, Nolan’s sniper team opened fire with non-lethal high-impact rubber rounds, picking off the remaining guards one by one until they hit the concrete groaning in pain.
Victor Vance tried to scramble for the side exit, but Lorenzo caught him by the back of his coat collar, slamming his face against a steel pillar with a sickening crunch before throwing him to the ground in handcuffs.

Marcus Santoro dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as Lorenzo walked slowly over to him, standing above him like a dark god of vengeance.
"You wanted my empire, Marcus?" Lorenzo whispered, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol against Marcus’s forehead. "You just bought yourself a one-way ticket to a federal supermax cell."
