Chapter 6 - The Council of CaposTwo days later, the atmosphere inside the Moretti mansion shifted from quiet tension to outright war.

Word had leaked through the underground network. Despite Lorenzo’s strict security measures, a whisper had slipped past the kitchen staff and reached the remaining regional capos: The ghost of the Moretti bloodline had returned, and she was barely three years old.

By Friday afternoon, five black armored SUVs rolled through the front gates, parking in a menacing semicircle around the central fountain. Five regional bosses—men who controlled the docks, the financial laundering rings, and the security syndicates across the tri-state area—marched into the mansion uninvited, demanding an immediate audience with the Don.

Elena stood by the second-floor landing of the grand staircase, looking down through the wrought-iron banister into the massive foyer below. Her heart pounded against her ribs as she watched the five powerful, dangerous men take off their wet coats and hand them to trembling guards.

In the center of the foyer stood Lorenzo. He hadn't even bothered to stand behind his desk. He waited at the foot of the stairs, flanked only by Nolan Reyes and two heavy enforcers, his hands resting calmly in his pockets, exuding an aura of absolute, terrifying dominance.

"Lorenzo," spoke Victor Vance, the oldest and most ruthless capo of the northern territory, his voice echoing off the marble pillars. "Word on the street is very interesting this morning. Word is that you've got a civilian woman and a toddler locked away in the east wing, and you're treating them like royalty."

"Is that your business, Victor?" Lorenzo asked, his voice deceptively calm, cutting through the foyer like a razor blade.

"It becomes our business when the future of the syndicate is compromised," another capo chimed in—Marcus Santoro, a younger, volatile boss who controlled the weapons trafficking routes. "A bastard child? An unknown woman from nowhere? Lorenzo, you've been soft since you got out of federal custody. You're letting sentimentality cloud your judgment. If the Rossi loyalists or the federal prosecutors find out about an heir, they'll use her to squeeze you until you break."

The air in the foyer turned glacial.

Lorenzo didn't blink. He didn't raise his voice. He simply took two slow steps forward, closing the distance between himself and Marcus Santoro.

"Let me make something crystal clear to all of you," Lorenzo said, every word dripping with lethal venom. "The Moretti bloodline is not a vulnerability. It is the foundation upon which every single one of your fortunes rests. My daughter is off-limits. My woman is off-limits. Anyone who speaks their names in a tone I find disrespectful, or even thinks about using them as leverage, will find themselves feeding the fish in Lake Michigan before the sun sets."

Marcus’s face flushed with anger, his hand twitching toward his inside pocket. "You're threatening your own capos over a maid and a brat? You're losing your grip, Lorenzo—"

Before Marcus could finish the sentence, a deafening gunshot rang through the foyer.

Elena gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth as she watched. Lorenzo hadn't even drawn his own weapon. Nolan Reyes, standing ten feet away, had fired a single bullet that embedded itself into the hardwood floor exactly one inch from Marcus Santoro’s polished leather shoe.

Marcus froze, his breath catching in his throat, color draining entirely from his face.

"The boss didn't give you permission to finish your sentence, Marcus," Nolan said coldly, casually spinning his revolver back into its holster.

Lorenzo stared down at Marcus, his pale grey eyes burning with absolute fury. "Next time, Nolan won't aim for the floor. Now get out of my house. All of you. You have a meeting to attend at the docks, and I expect your reports on my desk by midnight."

For a tense, agonizing second, none of the capos moved. They stared at Lorenzo, recognizing the unyielding monster they had sworn allegiance to. Finally, Victor Vance cleared his throat, grabbed Marcus by the shoulder, and led the group toward the massive front doors.

As the heavy doors slammed shut behind them, Lorenzo slowly lifted his head, looking straight up through the iron banister to the second-floor landing.

His eyes locked onto Elena’s pale, terrified face.

He didn't say a word, but the silent message was unmistakable: I told you I would protect you. I meant it.
