Chapter 3 - The Golden CageThe east wing guest suite was larger than Elena’s entire previous apartment in the gritty industrial district across town. High vaulted ceilings, dark mahogany furniture, Persian rugs, and tall arched windows overlooking the courtyard gave the room an air of timeless, oppressive luxury.

A crib had been hastily moved into the adjoining room, alongside dressers filled with designer children's clothing that Nolan’s men had somehow procured within an hour of Lorenzo’s orders.

Elena sat on the edge of the velvet king-sized bed, watching Mia happily play with a collection of wooden toys spread across the carpet. The reality of her situation was settling over her like a heavy, leaden blanket. She wasn't just a maid anymore. She was trapped inside the very fortress she had spent three years running from—and this time, the doors were locked from the outside.

A soft knock at the door broke her trance.

Before she could answer, the door clicked open, and Lorenzo stepped into the room. He had removed his suit jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his forearms to reveal the faint, jagged scars of a violent past. He looked less like an untouchable mob boss in that moment and more like a weary man carrying the weight of a world he had built with his own blood.

Mia looked up from her toys, her eyes lighting up with the innocent enthusiasm only a three-year-old could muster.

"The dog-ring man!" she announced happily, scrambling to her feet and running across the carpet toward him.

Elena froze, half-rising from the bed. "Mia, stop—"

But Lorenzo knelt down smoothly, catching the little girl by the waist before she could crash into his shins, lifting her effortlessly into his arms. Mia squealed with delight, wrapping her small arms around his neck and tugging playfully at the silver collar of his shirt.

Lorenzo caught her effortlessly, a faint, ghost-like smile touching the corners of his lips—a sight so rare Elena felt as though she were witnessing a miracle.

"Did you call me the dog-ring man, little one?" Lorenzo asked, his voice softening into a gentle rumble that Elena had never, in all her years of knowing him, heard him use with anyone.

"Uh-huh," Mia nodded vigorously, pointing a tiny finger at the heavy signet ring still resting securely on her own thumb—though it was far too big, held in place by a piece of red yarn Nolan had apparently tied around it. "You gave me the shiny toy."

"It's not a toy," Lorenzo murmured, his eyes shifting from Mia’s face up to meet Elena’s terrified gaze across the room. "It's a promise."

Elena swallowed hard, stepping closer. "Lorenzo, please. Don't do this. Don't drag her into our history. She’s three years old. She doesn't know what a Moretti signet ring means."

"She'll learn," Lorenzo said flatly, setting Mia back down on the carpet and handing her a wooden puzzle piece before standing up and walking toward Elena. He stopped just a foot away, the sheer physical presence of him making the air feel thin. "And so will you, Elena. You thought you could erase three years of my life, fake your own death, and hide my flesh and blood in a tenement apartment across town?"

"I was protecting her from your enemies!" Elena hissed, frustration finally overriding her fear. "Every two-bit thug and rival syndicate in this state wants your head on a spike, Lorenzo! If they found out you had a daughter, she would have been used as leverage in your gang wars before she even learned how to spell her own name!"

"And do you think she's safer out there in the streets, living in squalor while you break your back scrubbing floors for minimum wage?" Lorenzo countered, his voice rising, sharp and dark with suppressed fury. He gripped the back of a nearby armchair, his knuckles turning white. "In my world, enemies are dealt with. Rivals are eliminated. Anyone who dares look at my family sideways ends up at the bottom of the river before sunrise. Nobody touches what is mine, Elena. Nobody."

"I am not your property!" Elena snapped back, stepping right up to his chest, refusing to cower anymore. "I never was! You built an empire on blood and fear, Lorenzo, and I couldn't live in the shadow of it anymore! That's why I ran!"

Silence descended on the suite like a falling guillotine.

Lorenzo stared down at her, his chest heaving slightly, his pale grey eyes burning with an intense, volatile cocktail of anger, possessiveness, and a raw, aching hurt that he had buried deep beneath years of ruthless ambition.

Before he could answer, a sharp chime echoed from the hallway outside.

A moment later, the door swung open without permission, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman with sharp features and raven hair strode into the suite, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.

It was Isabella Moretti—Lorenzo’s ruthless older sister and the chief financial officer of the family syndicate. And her eyes were locked directly on Mia.
