Chapter 7 - The Trap at the DocksThe midnight reports never arrived on Lorenzo’s desk.

Instead, at 1:30 AM, a secure satellite phone on Lorenzo’s mahogany desk began vibrating violently, emitting a harsh, encrypted tone that only meant one thing: Code Red.

Elena, who had been sitting in the armchair reading a children's book while Mia slept peacefully in the next room, watched as Lorenzo snapped up the phone, listening intently as Nolan’s frantic voice bled through the speaker.

“Boss, it’s a setup! Marcus and Victor didn't go to the docks for a meeting—they ambushed our shipping warehouse on Pier 42. They’ve locked down the perimeter with heavy mercs, and they’re broadcasting a message across the underground channels: they want you to trade yourself for the girl and her mother, or they burn the entire operation to the ground.”

Lorenzo’s face hardened into stone. A darkness so absolute washed over his features that Elena felt a cold shiver run straight down her spine.

"Hold the backup units three blocks away," Lorenzo commanded, his voice eerily calm and deadly. "Don't move until I give the order. I'm coming alone."

“Boss, that’s suicide—!”

"Do it, Nolan!" Lorenzo barked, cutting the transmission before slamming the phone back onto its cradle.

He stood up, walking over to the locked steel safe behind his desk. He spun the dial, pulled open the heavy door, and withdrew a customized Sig Sauer pistol along with two spare magazines, slipping them swiftly into his tactical holster.

Elena stood up from the armchair, her hands trembling. "You're going to them."

"I have to," Lorenzo said, not looking at her as he checked the slide of his weapon. "They think they can use you and Mia to stage a coup. They think my family is my weakness. I'm going to show them why they should never have tested me."

"Take me with you," Elena said, her voice shaking with a fierce, unexpected resolve.

Lorenzo snapped his head up, his eyes widening in shock. "Are you out of your mind? I'm walking into an active ambush with armed mercenaries—"

"They want us," Elena interrupted, stepping right up to him, her amber eyes burning with the same stubborn fire that had kept her alive through three years of hiding. "If you walk in there alone, they'll hold you at gunpoint and force you to sign over the syndicate holdings before they execute you anyway. But if I'm there... I know the layout of Pier 42. I managed the logistics database for those warehouses before I ran. I know the blind spots in their security grid."

Lorenzo stared at her, utterly speechless. For the first time since she had walked back into his life, he wasn't looking at a frightened maid or a desperate mother. He was looking at an equal.

"Nolan," Lorenzo spoke into his lapel comms, his voice dropping into absolute iron. "Prepare a second armored vehicle. And ready a team of our best snipers on the adjacent roof."
