Chapter 9 - REBUILDING THE EMPIRE

The news of the boardroom betrayal dominated the headlines for weeks.
Charles Voss and his accomplices were facing decades in federal prison for attempted murder and massive corporate fraud.
Whitfield Enterprises' stock initially tanked, but surged to record highs once the public saw Daniel's ruthless return to power.
However, the man sitting behind the massive desk in the CEO’s office had fundamentally changed.
Daniel stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city move below him.
Before the crash, his entire life had been measured in profit margins and hostile takeovers.
He had lived in a mansion filled with expensive art, yet he had never known a single moment of actual warmth.
There was a soft knock on his office door, breaking him out of his deep thoughts.
Maria stood awkwardly in the doorway, wearing her best Sunday dress instead of a grey uniform.
Sophia was holding her hand, clutching a brand new box of expensive crayons.
"You asked to see us, Mr. Whitfield?" Maria asked, still deeply intimidated by his immense wealth.
Daniel smiled, genuinely and warmly, for perhaps the first time in his adult life.
"Please, Maria, call me Daniel," he said, walking around the desk to greet them.
He knelt down to Sophia’s level, wincing slightly as his healing ribs protested the movement.
"I never properly thanked you for saving my life," Daniel told the little girl.
Sophia handed him a drawing she had made, featuring a stick figure of Daniel fighting a monster in a suit.
"You aren't scared anymore," Sophia said proudly.

Daniel took the drawing, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
"No, I am not," he whispered, standing up to face her mother.
