Chapter 9 - The Trial

Six months later, the courtroom was packed with journalists and curious onlookers.

The fluorescent lights of the courthouse were much softer than the supermarket, but the tension was far heavier.

Emily sat confidently in the witness box, wearing a neat navy blue dress.

Her posture was perfect, her voice clear and unwavering as she recounted the events.

She did not look at Nathan, who sat at the defense table looking completely defeated.

He had lost weight, and his arrogant demeanor had been completely crushed by the reality of his situation.

Rebecca had already taken a plea deal, turning state's evidence in exchange for a slightly reduced sentence.

She had cried on the stand, but no one in the jury box looked sympathetic.

When the prosecutor played the video of the mirror’s reflection, an audible gasp rippled through the courtroom.

The jury watched, mesmerized, as Nathan’s calculated betrayal was broadcast on the giant television screen.

Nathan’s defense attorney didn't even bother to cross-examine Emily.

There was simply nothing left to say.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When they returned, the foreperson stood up and faced the judge.

"On the counts of grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit fraud, we find the defendant, Nathan Brooks..."

The courtroom held its collective breath.

"...Guilty on all counts."

Nathan closed his eyes as the heavy sound of the judge's gavel echoed through the room.

He was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole.

Rebecca received seven years in a state facility.

Justice had not just been served; it had been delivered with absolute precision.

Laura grabbed Emily’s hand in the gallery and squeezed it tightly, tears of profound relief streaming down her face.

The nightmare was finally over.
