Chapter 4 - The Corporate Guillotine

The sun rose over the supermarket the next morning, but the atmosphere was far from normal.
Three dark SUVs pulled up to the front entrance before the store even opened to the public.
Men and women in sharp business suits stepped out, carrying heavy leather briefcases.
These were the corporate auditors from the regional headquarters in Chicago.
Karen stood by the customer service desk, waiting for them with her arms crossed.
She had spent the entire night pulling security footage and transaction logs.
The lead auditor, a stern-faced woman named Ms. Vance, shook Karen’s hand firmly.
"You handled this perfectly, Karen," Ms. Vance said, adjusting her glasses.
"Headquarters is horrified, but we are grateful for your quick intervention."
"The credit goes to Emily," Karen replied instantly.
"If that brave sixteen-year-old hadn't refused to process the final transaction, we might never have caught the anomaly."
Ms. Vance nodded slowly, opening her laptop right there on the service counter.
"We need to do a full forensic sweep of Nathan’s office," Ms. Vance ordered her team.
The auditors swarmed the back rooms like a well-trained military unit.
They tore through file cabinets, unencrypted hard drives, and shredded documents.
What they found was worse than anyone had anticipated.
Nathan hadn't just been stealing gift cards.
He had been manipulating the payroll system, shaving overtime hours off minimum-wage employees for months.
He had been skimming off the top of the store’s charity donation drives.
"He was a parasite," Karen muttered, looking at the spreadsheet of stolen funds.
"And he thought he could use a teenage girl as his ultimate scapegoat."
"He underestimated the wrong girl," Ms. Vance replied, closing her laptop with a sharp snap.
"Corporate wants to make a massive example out of him."

"We are pressing every single federal charge available."
The net around Nathan Brooks was tightening into an inescapable steel trap.
