Chapter 6 - The Bailout

Despite the overwhelming evidence, the justice system was a slow, grinding machine.
Three days after the arrest, Nathan Brooks managed to post his exorbitant bail.
He had liquidated his remaining assets and hired a ruthless defense attorney.
His strategy was desperate, malicious, and entirely focused on discrediting Emily.
Emily returned to her shift at the supermarket on a Tuesday afternoon.
She felt nervous, but Karen had assured her that she was perfectly safe.
Security had been doubled, and a guard was stationed right near the checkout lanes.
But Nathan was cunning.
He didn't come into the store.
Instead, he waited in a dark sedan at the far edge of the employee parking lot.
When Emily’s shift ended at eight o'clock, she walked out into the cool evening air.
She pulled her jacket tight, walking toward her mother's car parked near the streetlamps.
Suddenly, the dark sedan rolled forward, blocking her path.
The tinted passenger window slowly rolled down.
Nathan’s face appeared in the shadows, his eyes burning with venom.
"You think you've won, little girl?" Nathan hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage.
Emily froze, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
"My lawyers are going to tear you apart on the stand," Nathan sneered.
"They're going to pull up your social media, your school records, everything."
"We are going to tell the jury that YOU were the mastermind, and I was just the manager who caught you."
Emily took a deep breath, forcing herself to look him directly in the eye.
She remembered the feeling of utter helplessness at the register.
She swore to herself she would never feel that way again.
"You're a coward, Nathan," Emily said, her voice shockingly steady.
"You hide in the dark because you know you're guilty."
She pulled out her phone and held it up, showing him the screen.
The video recording app was open, and the timer was ticking.
"And you just violated your restraining order on camera," Emily added coldly.
Nathan’s eyes widened in sheer panic.
May you like
He slammed his foot on the gas, the sedan’s tires screeching loudly as he sped out of the parking lot.
Emily hit 'stop recording' and immediately dialed the police.
