Chapter 7 - The Fatal Mistake

Nathan’s intimidation attempt was the final nail in his own coffin.

The police arrived at his apartment twenty minutes later and kicked the door down.

Violating a judge's restraining order while out on bail for a major felony was a guaranteed trip back to a jail cell.

This time, there would be no bail.

But the case wasn't completely closed yet.

The ruthless defense attorney Nathan had hired was still trying to build a narrative of reasonable doubt.

He claimed the offshore accounts had been hacked.

He claimed Rebecca was a disgruntled customer trying to frame his client.

Karen and the corporate auditors knew they needed a smoking gun to bury Nathan forever.

They needed visual proof of Nathan manipulating the system before the incident.

Emily sat in Karen’s office, staring at the store blueprints spread across the desk.

"He knew the blind spots," Karen sighed, rubbing her temples in frustration.

"The cameras over the registers catch the customers, but not the manager override keyboards."

Emily closed her eyes, placing herself back in that terrifying moment.

She remembered the bright fluorescent lights.

She remembered the beige walls, the barcode scanner, the scattered gift cards.

And then, she remembered something else.

She remembered the small, decorative mirror hanging on the pillar behind the customer service desk.

"Karen," Emily said suddenly, her eyes snapping open.

"What about the security dome in the pharmacy aisle?"

"That camera points down the medicine aisle, Emily," Karen replied. "It faces away from the registers."

"Yes," Emily nodded excitedly, pointing to the blueprint.

"But the reflection in the decorative mirror behind customer service!"

"If you zoom in on the mirror's reflection from the pharmacy camera, you might be able to see the keyboards!"

Karen stared at Emily, completely stunned by the brilliant deduction.

Without a word, Karen grabbed her keys and sprinted toward the server room.
