Chapter 8 - The Reflection of Guilt

The server room was freezing cold, filled with the hum of massive computers.
Karen, Emily, and Ms. Vance crowded around a single, glowing monitor.
Karen pulled up the archival footage from the pharmacy aisle camera.
She selected the date from two weeks ago—the day Emily first noticed someone standing behind her.
The screen showed a high-definition view of the cough syrup and band-aids.
But in the top left corner of the frame, partially obscured by a promotional sign, was the decorative mirror.
"Enhance that quadrant," Ms. Vance ordered, leaning closer to the screen.
Karen typed furiously, zooming in on the mirror and applying a sharpening filter.
The image was grainy, but it was unmistakably clear.
The reflection showed the checkout area from a reverse angle.
It showed Emily standing at her register, bagging groceries.
And it showed Nathan Brooks creeping up behind her.
The camera caught his exact movements.
It showed him staring directly at her hands as she typed in her new security code.
It showed him pulling out a small notepad and writing the numbers down.
"Got him," Karen whispered, a massive smile spreading across her face.
But that wasn't all.
Karen fast-forwarded the footage to the night before the big confrontation.
The mirror's reflection caught Nathan sneaking onto Emily's register after hours.
It clearly showed him pre-authorizing the gift card system to bypass the manager approval limit for the next day.
He had rigged the machine specifically to trap Emily.
"This is premeditated cyber-fraud," Ms. Vance said, saving the files to three separate encrypted drives.
"His defense attorney is going to have a heart attack when we hand this over during discovery."
Emily let out a breath she felt she had been holding for a week.

The truth was finally captured in undeniable, high-definition reality.
There was no escaping it now.
