Chapter 33 - The Watch in the Dark

By midnight, the villa was wrapped in absolute stillness. The kitchen fire had died down to a dull, pulsing bed of red embers that cast long, ghostly shadows across the stone floor. Upstairs, Leo was fast asleep, his breathing soft and even beneath the heavy linen covers.
Elena and Ricardo sat on the wide stone bench outside the master suite, wrapped in a single heavy wool blanket against the mountain chill. The moon was a sharp, silver sliver high above the sea, casting a brilliant, frozen path of light across the dark water.
There were no whispers of caution, no loaded weapons tucked beneath the pillows, and no phantom footsteps echoing down the corridor. There was only the distant, steady murmur of the surf crashing against the rocks far below and the quiet, unbreakable pressure of their shoulders pressed together in the dark.
"Do you ever dream about the tower?" Elena asked quietly, her voice barely louder than the night wind sighing through the olive branches.
"Sometimes," Ricardo admitted, his dark eyes fixed on the silver path across the sea. "The glass, the marble, the meetings where everyone was smiling while calculating how quickly they could put a knife in your back." He paused, shifting his weight slightly. "And then I wake up, and I smell the rosemary from the garden, and I realize we left that museum of vipers behind forever."

Elena turned her head, pressing her cheek against his shoulder. "We didn't just leave it behind, Ricardo. We burned the foundation so no one else could ever live in our ruins."
Ricardo wrapped his arm tighter around her, pulling her close against his chest until her heartbeat synchronized with his own. "And what we built instead," he whispered against her hair, "is something the fire can never touch."
