Chapter 21 - THE AMALFI COASTLINE

The Mediterranean sun beat down in a brilliant, golden torrent against the white stucco walls of the cliffside villa overlooking the Amalfi coast. Far below, the azure waters of the sea crashed gently against the jagged rocks, sending up plumes of white spray that sparkled like diamonds in the midday light.
Elena stood on the sun-drenched stone terrace, wearing a light linen sundress that fluttered softly in the warm sea breeze. The air smelled of salt, blooming bougainvillea, and sun-baked citrus groves—a world away from the cold, concrete canyons of Manhattan.
Behind her, the French doors of the villa stood wide open. Inside, Leo could be heard chattering happily with the estate caretaker as they explored the terraced lemon gardens near the lower cliffs.
Footsteps echoed softly across the stone pavers of the terrace. Ricardo walked out carrying two glasses of iced lemonade, his white linen shirt open at the collar, looking every bit the Mediterranean landowner rather than a New York syndicate king.
He handed a glass to Elena, brushing his fingers lightly against hers before stepping up to the stone balustrade beside her to look out over the endless blue expanse of the sea.
"The secure satellite phone has rung exactly zero times since we landed," Ricardo observed with dry satisfaction, taking a sip of his drink. "Marcus is handling the board meetings in Chicago, and the state attorney general has officially dismissed Julian Vance’s remaining appeals."
Elena smiled, leaning her forearms against the cool stone balustrade. "You see? The world doesn't end just because the chairman takes a week off."
"The world doesn't end," Ricardo agreed, turning his dark eyes to study her profile in the bright sunlight, "it just gets significantly quieter."
He reached out, setting his glass down on the stone ledge, and slid his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest. Elena leaned into his warmth, closing her eyes as the warm sea breeze washed over them.
"Do you ever think about going back?" Elena asked quietly, her voice barely louder than the sound of the waves below. "To New York? To the tower?"
"We'll go back when the time is right," Ricardo answered, his voice deep, steady, and resonant against her spine. "The tower is there, the archives are secure, and the empire is protected. But a home isn't a building, Elena. A home is wherever we decide to stop running."
Elena turned in his arms, looking up into his dark, unyielding eyes—eyes that had once terrified an entire city, but now held nothing for her except absolute devotion.

"We stopped running a long time ago, Ricardo," she whispered.
He didn't answer with words. He simply leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, slow, perfect kiss that tasted of salt, sunshine, and a future they had won out of the fire.
