Chapter 20 - THE PRIVATE DEPARTURE

Two days later, before dawn had even begun to break over the Atlantic, a sleek black helicopter lifted off the private pad atop the Vance Tower, cutting silently through the predawn mist toward JFK International Airport.
Inside the cabin, the lighting was dim and muted. Leo was fast asleep on a plush leather berth across from them, clutching his wooden toy soldier with one arm, exhausted from the excitement of an early morning flight.
Elena sat by the window, watching the glittering grid of Manhattan shrink beneath them into a cluster of distant stars as the aircraft climbed steadily into the upper atmosphere. The weight of the city, the political tension with Julian Vance, the shadow of the archives, and the endless ledgers of the syndicate all faded away, replaced by the quiet hum of the jet engines and the steady, grounding presence of the man sitting beside her.
Ricardo reached across the narrow aisle, taking her hand in his. His fingers were warm, strong, and calloused—the hands of a man who had fought through wars, syndicates, and political betrayals, yet held her as if she were the most fragile, precious thing in existence.
"Thinking about the archives?" Ricardo asked softly, noticing the thoughtful expression on her face.
"No," Elena answered honestly, turning her head to look at him with a small, triumphant smile. "I was thinking that for the first time in my life, I don't care what's written in the history books."
Ricardo’s lips curved into a slow, rare smile that reached his dark eyes, erasing every remnant of the hard, dangerous reputation that haunted the streets below.
