Chapter 12 - THE RETREAT TO THE PENTHOUSE

Within an hour of the federal team's retreat, Ricardo’s private security detail had secured the estate. Armored black SUVs were positioned at the perimeter gates, and discreet intelligence analysts swept the house for hidden surveillance bugs or tracking devices left behind by Julian Vance’s tactical unit.
Elena and Ricardo sat in the back of a bulletproof town car as it glided smoothly out of the estate gates, cutting through the damp, midnight streets of Manhattan toward Ricardo’s primary residence—the legendary high-security penthouse atop the Vance Tower in downtown New York.
The city outside the tinted windows blurred into a dazzling river of neon and amber streetlights. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was quiet, bathed in the soft, ambient glow of the dashboard lights.
Elena rested her head against the plush leather headrest, watching Ricardo out of the corner of her eye. He sat with effortless authority, one arm resting along the window sill, his dark gaze fixed straight ahead as he reviewed encrypted data streams on his secure tablet. Even after a confrontation that could have ended in a bloodbath, his pulse was steady, his focus absolute.
"You don't have to keep checking the encrypted servers," Elena murmured softly, breaking the silence. "Julian’s tactical team is halfway to Albany by now, licking their wounds and trying to figure out how to explain to their superiors why they retreated from an unarmed man."
Ricardo locked the tablet with a sharp click and set it down on the center console. He turned his head, his dark eyes softening as he looked at her across the dimly lit interior.
"I'm not checking Julian's servers," Ricardo said, his voice smooth and low. "I'm checking flight manifests to Europe."
Elena blinked in surprise, sitting up slightly. "Europe? Why are we looking at flight manifests?"
"Because this estate is no longer safe for you," Ricardo stated, his tone brooking no argument. "Julian is cornered, and a cornered rat will chew through lead to escape. Once he realizes my dead-man switch was a bluff—or even if he suspects it wasn't—he’ll try to strike at the softest target he can find."
"I am not a soft target, Ricardo," Elena protested, a flash of her characteristic defiance sparking in her eyes. "I stood in that kitchen with a tray of milk while a squad of armed marshals pointed rifles at my chest. I didn't break then, and I won't break now."
"I know you didn't break," Ricardo replied, his voice dropping into a warm, resonant hum as he reached out and gently took her hand, his thumb stroking the back of her knuckles. "You were magnificent. But this isn't about your courage, Elena. It's about my margin for error. I spent years keeping my personal life entirely detached from my business precisely so no one could ever use a woman I cared about as leverage against me."
He paused, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
"You stopped being leverage the moment you handed my son that glass of milk," Ricardo continued, his voice steady and absolute. "You became my life. And I will not risk your safety while I dismantle Julian Vance piece by piece."
Elena stared at him, the walls around her heart crumbling completely. The cold, calculating syndicate boss everyone in New York whispered about in terror was gone; in his place was a man offering her his absolute devotion, laying his kingdom at her feet because she had taught him how to care.
"If we leave for Europe," Elena said slowly, a small, knowing smile touching her lips, "Julian wins by default. He gets the estate, he gets the city, and he gets to pretend he chased us out."
Ricardo’s lips twitched into a slow, dangerous smile. "Who said anything about running away? We aren't going to Europe to hide, Elena. We're going to set up our base of operations in Zurich while my legal team systematically freezes every offshore asset Julian owns. We're going to choke him out from the international banking sector."

Elena laughed, a rich, genuine sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of the night. "You really are a ruthless strategist, aren't you?"
"Only when it comes to protecting what's mine," Ricardo murmured, pulling her hand up to press a warm, lingering kiss against her palm.
