Chapter 7 - The Final LedgerThe heavy oak doors of the ballroom slammed shut and locked from the outside. Marcus positioned himself and a team of federal agents—who had been waiting quietly in the wings—at every exit. No one was leaving.

Victoria stood cornered at the foot of the grand staircase, trembling violently, her emerald silk dress looking less like royal attire and more like a shroud.

"You can't do this," Victoria hissed, her voice dropping its sweet facade, revealing the venomous predator underneath. She glared at August with undisguised hatred. "Without me, your entire corporate empire crumbles. I own fifty percent of the voting shares through prenuptial restructuring!"

"Not anymore, Victoria," a smooth, calm voice echoed from the side entrance.

Stepping out from the shadows was Julian Caldwell—August’s younger brother. But Julian wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He was wearing federal handcuffs, flanked by two armed agents.

Victoria’s eyes bulged. "Julian... you fool!"

"Sorry, Vickie," Julian sighed, shaking his head. "When the Feds offered me immunity for handing over the offshore passcodes and the paper trail for the murder conspiracy, blood proved thicker than your bribery money."

August stepped forward, opening the mahogany box. He pulled out the microcassette recorder and a thick stack of certified bank transcripts, holding them up for the stunned crowd of elites and journalists to see.

"Eight years ago, you murdered my first wife, Eleanor, by poisoning her medication," August’s voice boomed, filled with righteous thunder. "You forged medical records. You staged a car crash to assassinate my daughter Caroline. And you systematically embezzled over forty million dollars from our charity foundation to fund your secret life with my brother."

"Lies! All of it lies!" Victoria screamed, lunging forward like a cornered animal, her fingernails clawing toward August’s face.

Before she could touch him, Marcus stepped in, grabbing her wrists with iron force and slamming her hands behind her back, clicking heavy steel cuffs around her wrists with a crisp, definitive clack.

"Victoria Caldwell, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and fraud," an FBI special agent announced loudly, stepping forward with an arrest warrant.

As the agents hauled a kicking and screaming Victoria down the grand staircase past rows of gaping, horrified socialites, the silence in the room was absolute.

August didn’t watch her leave. Instead, he knelt down on one knee, right in front of little Elsie.
