Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the ArchivesThe private study of the Caldwell estate smelled of old leather, expensive scotch, and suppressed panic.

August sat behind his massive mahogany desk, the sapphire ring resting on a velvet cloth right in front of him. He hadn't spoken a single word in twenty minutes. He just stared at it. Every microscopic scratch on the silver band was a memory—a birthday gift he had custom-ordered for Caroline when she turned sixteen.

A soft knock broke the silence. The door creaked open, and Marcus, August’s loyal head of security and personal fixer for over thirty years, stepped inside, locking the heavy oak door behind him.

"You ran the DNA database check?" August’s voice was a low, dangerous growl.

"I did, sir," Marcus said, his face grim. He placed a thick manila folder on the desk. "The girl's name is Elsie. According to local social services and birth records pulled from a rundown clinic in Tacoma... her mother was registered under the name Caroline Caldwell-Vance. Or just Caroline Vance."

August stood up so fast his chair slammed backward against the wood paneling. "Vance? That was the name of her college roommate! The one who helped her pack the night she ran away!"

"It gets worse, sir," Marcus warned quietly, opening the folder. "The death certificate from eight years ago... the one for your daughter Caroline? We pulled the original file from the county coroner's office. The body recovered from that wreckage was burned beyond dental recognition. It was identified solely on the word of..." Marcus hesitated, swallowing hard.

"On the word of whom, Marcus?!"

"On the word of Mrs. Victoria Caldwell."

August’s breath caught in his throat. The room seemed to tilt sideways. Victoria. It was Victoria who had accompanied the police to the morgue. It was Victoria who had clutched the charred remains of a silver chain and declared, 'Yes, that's her. That's my stepdaughter.'

"Where is the girl now?" August demanded, his fists balling up so tight his nails dug into his palms.

"Downstairs in the guest wing. Under medical observation and eating enough food for three people. She’s remarkably resilient, boss. But she keeps asking about a box. A wooden box her mother left hidden under floorboards in their apartment."

August didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the sapphire ring, slipped it safely into his waistcoat pocket, and strode toward the door. "We are going to find that box, Marcus. And then, I am going to have a very long, very terrifying conversation with my wife."

Little did August know, Victoria was already listening. On the other side of the mahogany door, pressed flat against the wall in the dark hallway, Victoria clutched her pearl necklace, her heart hammering like a trapped bird.

If August found that box, her entire empire—built on lies, betrayal, and cold-blooded murder—would come crashing down.
