Chapter 6 - The Dinner Party TrapThe invitation list for Saturday night's elite charity gala at the Caldwell estate read like a who's who of American aristocracy. Senators, tech barons, and foreign ambassadors mingled under the glittering chandeliers, completely unaware of the storm brewing beneath the surface.

Victoria Caldwell stood at the top of the grand staircase, draped in emerald silk and diamonds that cost more than a suburban neighborhood. Her smile was radiant, her posture impeccable. But inside, her stomach was a knot of pure acid.

August had been missing for forty-eight hours.

Her mercenaries had failed at the Tacoma apartment. The mahogany box was gone. And worse, Julian had gone radio silent.

“Calm down, Victoria,” she whispered to herself, adjusting her diamond choker. “August is an old man blinded by grief. Even if he found something, he has no ironclad proof. You control the board. You control the estate.”

At that exact moment, the massive double doors at the bottom of the grand staircase swung open.

The murmur of conversation in the ballroom instantly died.

Every head turned.

Descending the staircase wasn't just August Caldwell. He walked with the terrifying, unshakeable authority of a king reclaiming his throne. On his right hand walked Marcus, watchful and cold. And walking right beside August—holding his hand, dressed in a brand-new, ivory velvet dress tailored to perfection—was seven-year-old Elsie.

Victoria froze halfway down the stairs, her breath catching in her throat. Her face lost all its color, turning the shade of old parchment.

"Ladies and gentlemen," August’s deep, resonant voice echoed effortlessly across the cavernous ballroom, silencing every whisper. "Thank you for attending tonight. Before we begin our dinner, there is a family matter I need to address."

Victoria’s knees wobbled. She gripped the polished mahogany banister for dear life. "August, darling," she managed to force a shaky, high-pitched laugh, stepping forward. "What is the meaning of this? Who is this street child, and why have you brought her into our home?"

August stopped at the landing, looking up at his wife with eyes as cold and lifeless as arctic ice.

"Victoria," August said softly, the microphone amplifying every syllable. "Meet my granddaughter. Elsie Caldwell-Vance."

The ballroom erupted into instant, deafening chaos. Reporters with hidden cameras—invited specifically by Marcus—scrambled forward, their camera shutters flashing like a strobe light.

"You're insane!" Victoria shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure entirely, her voice cracking with panic. "The child is a fraud! A vagrant! August, have security drag her out!"

"Security?" August stepped closer, pulling the mahogany lockbox out from beneath his arm and slamming it down onto the display table beside the grand staircase. "The only security being called tonight, Victoria, is the FBI."
