Chapter 4 - Ambush in the Dark"Don't move a muscle, Mr. Caldwell," a cold, metallic voice echoed from behind the leader's balaclava.

August instinctively threw his arm out, shielding little Elsie behind his massive frame, while his other hand slammed the lid of the mahogany box shut. His heart hammered like a war drum, but the billionaire’s face remained a mask of pure, unyielding fury.
"Victoria sent you," August stated, his voice flat and deadly.
The lead gunman let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Mrs. Caldwell sends her regards. Now, step away from the box, sir. Hand it over, and maybe we make this quick for you and the brat."
Marcus, gritting his teeth against the pain in his shoulder, shifted his weight. He wasn't just a head of security; he was a former military operative. With a sudden, explosive burst of speed, Marcus lunged sideways, slamming into the leading gunman and driving him hard against the flimsy drywall.
Bang!
A silenced bullet chewed through the ceiling plaster. Chaos erupted in the cramped apartment.
"Run, Elsie! Take the box!" August roared, shoving the heavy mahogany chest into the terrified girl's arms and lifting her bodily toward the bathroom window that led to the rusted emergency fire escape.
"I won't leave you!" Elsie sobbed, clutching the box to her chest.
"Go! Use the alley! Marcus will find you!" August yelled as he tackled the second gunman, driving his elbow upward into the man's jaw with a sickening crunch.
The third operative raised his weapon, aiming straight at August’s back as the billionaire grappled with his attacker. But before he could pull the trigger, Marcus, bleeding profusely from his shoulder, lunged across the room like a wounded animal, tackling the shooter over the low coffee table. Glass shattered everywhere.
"Get out! Go, boss!" Marcus yelled, pinning the final operative to the floor.
August didn't hesitate. He vaulted through the bathroom window into the freezing Seattle rain, scrambling down the clanking metal stairs after Elsie. The rain poured down in sheets, plastering his expensive suit to his skin, but adrenaline fueled every stride.
They hit the alleyway just as sirens began to wail in the distance. Real police sirens. Victoria’s mercenaries, realizing the authorities were drawing close, vanished into the shadows like ghosts.

August scooped Elsie into his arms, the mahogany box tucked securely under his other arm, and sprinted toward the end of the block where Marcus’s backup vehicle—a nondescript black SUV—was already tearing around the corner with its doors flung open.
They were safe for the moment. But the war had officially begun.
