Chapter 9 - Bringing Baby Home

A month after the nightmare on the coast road, the morning sun poured brightly through the bay windows of our newly renovated Greyport estate, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished hardwood floors. The dark, oppressive shadow that had haunted our marriage for years was completely gone, replaced by the soft, sweet sounds of newborn life. I stood by the nursery window, rocking our daughter—whom we named Clara Vera—gently in my arms as she slept peacefully against my chest, her tiny chest rising and falling in perfect, rhythmic harmony.

The door to the nursery clicked open softly, and Mateo stepped inside. He had changed completely over the past weeks; the cold, untouchable kingpin was gone, replaced by a devoted father who spent hours reading bedtime stories to an infant who couldn't yet understand words, and a husband who cooked simple meals and checked my scars every evening with tender care. He walked up behind me, wrapping his strong, steady arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder as he looked down at our sleeping daughter.

""She has your eyes, Elena,"" Mateo whispered, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the crook of my neck. ""Thank God for that,"" I replied with a faint, genuine smile, leaning back into his embrace. ""If she had your stubbornness, we'd never sleep a wink."" Mateo chuckled softly, tightening his arms around us both, anchoring us against any storm the world could ever try to throw our way again. We had walked through fire, betrayal, and a near-fatal crash, but we had emerged on the other side unbowed and unbroken.

The doorbell chimed softly downstairs—not the heavy knock of mob enforcers or federal agents, but the delivery of legal documents confirming the permanent dissolution of our enemies and the final certification of our legitimate shipping enterprise. Mateo didn't even twitch toward the door. He simply kissed my temple again, completely focused on the only two treasures in this world that truly mattered to him. The ledger of our past had been wiped clean in blood and fire, and a brand-new chapter had finally begun.
