Chapter 5 - The Emergency Delivery

Back inside the bright, sterile theater of the operating room, the monitors suddenly flickered back to life with a weak, erratic blip. ""We have a rhythm! Sinus rhythm returning!"" an anesthesiologist yelled over the din. Dr. Mercer didn't hesitate for a single second. ""She's stabilizing just enough! Scalpel!"" Cold steel met flesh, and the emergency perimortem Caesarean section commenced under high-stakes conditions. Every second counted; oxygen deprivation had pushed the baby to the absolute brink of survival.
Sweat dripped into Dr. Mercer’s eyes as she worked with miraculous precision, parting the uterine wall to extract a tiny, fragile form covered in vernix and blood. For three agonizing seconds, the delivery suite was entirely devoid of sound. No cries, no breath, just the heavy panting of the surgical nurses. My soul seemed to hover anxiously above the table, willing the tiny heart to beat. Then, a thin, piercing wail cut through the air—a tiny, defiant cry that proclaimed to the world my baby had made it across the threshold.

""It's a girl,"" a nurse whispered, tears glistening in her eyes as she quickly wrapped the infant in a sterile thermal blanket and rushed her to the neonatal resuscitation cart. ""Apgar is low, but she's breathing on her own! Get her to NICU immediately!"" Downstairs in the lobby, Mateo stood like a statue carved from ice, his men holding back the hospital security and local police who wanted answers about the suspicious car crash on the coast road. When the heavy double doors of the OR swung open and Dr. Mercer walked out, her scrubs stained with blood and exhaustion, Mateo lunged forward.
""How is she?"" Mateo demanded, his voice cracking violently. ""How is my wife? How is my baby?"" Dr. Mercer wiped her brow with the back of her gloved hand, looking at the feared mafia boss with undisguised contempt. ""Your daughter is alive, Mr. Vera, though she's fighting for every breath in the NICU because her mother’s body suffered catastrophic trauma. And Elena? Elena is holding on by a thread in the ICU. You almost killed them both—not just with your car crash, but with your blindness."" She walked past him without another word, leaving the kingpin standing alone in his absolute ruin.
