Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Throne

With Vivienne’s family syndicate dismantled and their assets absorbed into the Vera enterprise overnight, Mateo proved that his ruthlessness knew no bounds when it came to protecting his family. But power and territory meant nothing if the woman who held his heart refused to look at him. Over the next two weeks in the private suite, Mateo camped out in the corner chair, sleeping upright, bringing me fresh flowers every morning, and waiting patiently outside the NICU doors for hours just to catch a ten-minute glimpse of our daughter through the glass.

One afternoon, as I sat propped up in bed reviewing the discharge papers for our baby girl, Mateo walked in holding a heavy, secure leather briefcase. He set it gently on the foot of my bed, opened the brass clasps, and pulled out a stack of thick legal documents. ""What is this?"" I asked, keeping my tone guarded and distant. Mateo knelt down beside the bed so that his eyes were level with mine, his expression stripped of all arrogance, leaving only raw, total vulnerability.

""It’s a complete transfer of power and assets,"" Mateo said steadily. ""Every single holding, every maritime shipping lane, every offshore account, and the main waterfront estate—they are all legally registered under your name and our daughter’s name, Elena. As of this morning, I have stepped down as head of the syndicate council. I am liquidating our high-risk operations to transition fully into legitimate global logistics."" I stared at him in genuine shock, flipping through the pages to find my signature as primary beneficiary and sole trustee.

""Why are you doing this?"" I asked quietly. ""Because for eight years, I let my crown blind me to the only queen who mattered,"" Mateo answered, his voice thick with emotion. ""I let power corrupt our home. I let monsters walk through our doors because I thought I was untouchable. You walked away because I failed you, Elena. And I spent every day of these past eight months burning in hell for it. I don't expect you to forgive me today, or tomorrow. But I will spend the rest of my life proving that I am worthy of the family I almost destroyed."" I looked at the legal papers, then looked at the fierce, repentant man kneeling before me, knowing the hardest battles were won not with bullets, but with redemption.
