Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The violent siege of the Highland Park estate lasted for exactly forty-five agonizing minutes of brutal, close-quarters combat.

Vincent Romano fought like a completely unhinged, demonic force of nature, driven entirely by the blinding, terrifying fear of losing the two people he loved.

He and his loyal enforcers systematically hunted down and slaughtered every single Falcone mercenary who had dared to cross his threshold.

When the final gunshot echoed through the ruined, smoking hallways of the mansion, the silence that followed was incredibly heavy and completely suffocating.

Vincent dropped his empty weapon onto the blood-stained marble floor, ignoring the painful, bleeding graze wound on his own shoulder.

"Ruby!" Vincent roared at the top of his lungs, sprinting up the ruined grand staircase with the speed of a desperate, terrified animal.

"Leo!"

He burst into the destroyed nursery, his heart completely stopping when he saw the bullet holes tearing through the walls and the child's empty bed.

A massive, crushing wave of absolute, soul-destroying grief threatened to drop him to his knees, believing he had lost everything again.

But then, he noticed the heavy bronze lamp lying on the floor, and the faint, smeared trail of blood leading directly to the hidden panic room.

Vincent rushed to the titanium panel, punching in the master override code with frantically trembling, blood-stained fingers.

The heavy door hissed and slowly slid open, revealing the dark, secure interior of the bunker.

Ruby was sitting on the floor in the corner, her dress torn and covered in dust, her arm bleeding, but she was holding his son securely against her chest.

Leo was completely unharmed, sleeping an exhausted, fitful sleep wrapped safely in her warm, protective embrace.

When Ruby looked up and saw Vincent standing in the doorway, completely alive and breathing, a massive sob of absolute relief tore from her throat.

Vincent dropped to his knees on the cold steel floor, wrapping his massive, muscular arms fiercely around both of them in a desperate, crushing hug.

He buried his face deeply in the crook of Ruby’s neck, his broad shoulders shaking violently as the most feared mafia boss in Chicago finally wept.

"You are safe, you are both completely safe," Vincent whispered brokenly into her hair, holding them as if he would never, ever let them go again.

"I thought I lost you, Ruby. I thought they took you away from me."

Ruby reached up with her uninjured hand, gently stroking the back of his dark, messy hair, soothing the terrifying monster who only showed her his gentle soul.

"I am never going to leave you, Vincent," Ruby promised fiercely, kissing the side of his dirt-streaked face.

"I will protect this little boy with my last breath, and I will stand by your side until the very end."

Vincent pulled back slightly, looking directly into her beautiful, fiercely determined eyes, completely mesmerized by her incredible strength.

She was not just a poor maid seeking shelter, and she was not a fragile civilian terrified of his dark, violent world.

She was a queen, forged in the fires of poverty and hardship, possessing a level of absolute loyalty and courage that most seasoned soldiers never achieved.

"You are absolutely bleeding," Vincent noticed, his eyes darkening as he saw the deep, jagged scratch on her soft arm.

"It is just a scratch, Vincent, I am perfectly fine," Ruby assured him softly.

Vincent carefully picked up his sleeping son, cradling him in one arm, and then reached down to gently pull Ruby to her feet.

"We are leaving this house tonight, Ruby," Vincent announced, guiding them out of the ruined panic room and into the chaotic hallway.

"I am moving you to my secure penthouse in the city, and I am going to completely end the Falcone family before the sun comes up."

"Nobody touches my family and lives to see another day."
