Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

The peaceful, beautiful bubble that had formed around the Romano estate was a rare, fragile thing in the brutal world of the Chicago mafia.
Vincent had enemies, ruthless men who thrived on chaos, greed, and the constant, violent shifting of territorial power.
The most dangerous of these enemies was the Falcone family, a vicious rival syndicate responsible for the car bombing that had killed Vincent’s wife a year ago.
Don Falcone, a cruel and sadistic old man, had recently discovered the sudden, mysterious softening of the dreaded Vincent Romano.
He learned through his network of corrupt informants that Vincent had hired a poor, heavy-set maid, and that this woman had become his ultimate weakness.
"If Romano cares about this fat, pathetic little nanny, then she is the exact key to breaking him," Don Falcone sneered to his heavily armed lieutenants.
"We take the woman, we take the boy, and we force the great Vincent Romano to sign over his entire territory before we execute them all."
Unaware of the dark, impending threat gathering in the city, Ruby was busy experiencing the happiest days of her entire existence.
She and Leo had formed an incredibly deep, unbreakable maternal bond that completely transcended simple blood relations.
Leo no longer screamed when he woke up from his nightmares; he simply crawled into Ruby’s bed and buried his face in her warm, comforting chest.
He had even started speaking again, his first word being a soft, incredibly sweet "Ru-by" that made her cry tears of pure, absolute joy.
Vincent had officially stopped treating her as an employee, demanding that she sit next to him at the formal dining table for every meal.
They spent hours talking late into the night in the dark library, sharing stories about their vastly different, yet equally painful childhoods.
Ruby learned that beneath the terrifying, violent exterior of the mafia king, Vincent was a man desperately searching for a safe place to rest his heavy crown.
He learned that beneath Ruby’s crippling self-doubt and financial poverty, she possessed the heart of a fierce, incredibly resilient lioness.
"You have completely changed the very air in this house, Ruby," Vincent confessed one rainy evening, pouring her a cup of hot, sweet tea.
"Before you arrived, I was just waiting to die in a war, completely numb to everything except the pain of my son."
"Now, I actually want to live, just so I can see you smile in the morning."
Ruby looked at the terrifying, gorgeous man sitting across from her, realizing with absolute certainty that she was falling completely in love with a criminal.
She knew his world was dangerous, soaked in blood and governed by harsh, unforgiving rules that she did not understand.
But she also knew that he loved his son more than life itself, and he treated her with more respect than any "good" man ever had.
"I want to stay here, Vincent," Ruby whispered softly, using his first name for the very first time.
"I want to stay with you and Leo forever, if you will have me."
Vincent stood up from his leather chair, walking over to her and gently cupping her soft, beautiful face in his large, calloused hands.
He leaned down, pressing a soft, incredibly tender kiss against her forehead, a silent, powerful promise of eternal devotion.
But before he could finally press his lips to hers in a true, passionate kiss, the deafening, terrifying sound of shattering glass exploded from the front of the mansion.
The perimeter alarms began shrieking with a blaring, red-flashing intensity, signaling a massive, catastrophic breach of the estate's defenses.

The Falcone family had not waited for a subtle opportunity to strike; they had launched a full-scale, heavily armed military assault on the house.
Vincent instantly pulled his heavy tactical pistol from his shoulder holster, his eyes turning back into shattered black ice as the war finally arrived at his doorstep.
