Chapter 5 - The Reflection in the Mirror

The dynamic inside the massive Romano estate shifted drastically after the terrifying incident with the loan shark.
Ruby was no longer treated like a simple, disposable maid by the heavily armed security guards or the household staff.
They opened doors for her, they carried her groceries, and they spoke to her with a level of deep, undeniable respect usually reserved only for a mafia queen.
But despite the incredible, overwhelming kindness surrounding her, Ruby still struggled deeply with her own shattered self-worth.
She had spent her entire life being mocked for her heavy, full-figured body, constantly told by society that she was not worthy of luxury or romance.
One afternoon, Vincent requested that Ruby accompany him and Leo to a highly exclusive, private charity gala hosted at a downtown museum.
"I cannot go to a gala, Mister Romano," Ruby panicked, looking down in shame at her faded, thrift-store clothing.
"I am just a nanny, and I do not have a single dress that would fit a woman of my size in a place like that."
Vincent did not accept her pathetic excuses; he simply made a single, discreet phone call to his personal assistant.
Two hours later, a team of elite, high-end tailors and fashion designers arrived at the mansion carrying dozens of massive garment bags.
They politely ushered a completely terrified Ruby into the master guest suite, measuring her curves and dressing her in fabrics she had never even touched before.
When she finally emerged from the suite that evening, she did not recognize the stunning, breathtaking woman staring back at her in the hallway mirror.
She was wearing a custom-designed, deep emerald green gown that hugged her generous curves perfectly, accentuating her full bust and narrow waist.
Her dark hair was styled into elegant, cascading waves, and a delicate, sparkling diamond necklace rested beautifully against her collarbone.
Vincent was waiting for her at the bottom of the grand marble staircase, wearing a bespoke, incredibly sharp black tuxedo.
When he looked up and saw her descending the stairs, his entire body froze, and all the breath completely left his lungs.
He had always known she was beautiful, possessing a soft, warm, nurturing soul that radiated like the sun.
But seeing her dressed like a literal goddess, embracing the powerful, gorgeous reality of her own body, absolutely destroyed his self-control.
He walked to the bottom step, reaching out to gently take her trembling, soft hand in his own calloused palm.
"You look absolutely breathtaking, Ruby," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with raw, unfiltered emotion and intense desire.
Ruby blushed deeply, a beautiful shade of crimson spreading across her cheeks as she looked down at the marble floor.
"You are just saying that to be kind, Mister Romano," she mumbled softly.
"I never say anything just to be kind," Vincent corrected her, lifting her chin with two fingers so she was forced to look directly into his dark eyes.
"You are the most incredibly beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire life, and I want everyone in this city to know it."
When they arrived at the charity gala, the entire room full of wealthy, arrogant socialites turned to stare at the terrifying mafia boss and his unexpected companion.
A thin, incredibly superficial woman dripping in plastic surgery scoffed loudly as Ruby walked past her table.
"I didn't realize Vincent Romano started bringing his kitchen staff to high-society events," the cruel woman whispered loudly to her wealthy husband.
Ruby’s heart shattered instantly, her shoulders slumping as the familiar, toxic shame of her past threatened to swallow her whole.
But Vincent did not let it happen.
He stopped walking, turning his cold, lethal gaze toward the superficial woman with an intensity that could freeze the ocean.
"This woman is the only reason my family still possesses a beating heart," Vincent announced, his voice echoing dangerously across the silent ballroom.
"And if you ever speak a disrespectful word about her again, your husband’s entire corporate empire will burn to the ground by sunrise."
The cruel woman turned absolutely pale, shrinking back into her chair in pure, unadulterated terror as the entire room went dead silent.

Vincent gently placed his hand on the small of Ruby’s back, guiding her forward with absolute, undeniable pride.
For the first time in her twenty-four years of life, Ruby Jenkins finally realized that she was worthy of being fiercely, publicly protected.
