Chapter 15 - The Unyielding Vanguard

The sun dipped lower behind the tree line, casting long, dramatic shadows across the manicured lawns of the estate as evening approached. The children had eventually migrated from my study toward the grand conservatory, their laughter echoing down the vaulted stone corridors under the watchful eye of our domestic security detail.
I remained at the mahogany desk, the room now illuminated only by the soft, amber glow of a single brass desk lamp. The encrypted terminal before me flickered to life, displaying a high-priority data packet routed directly from our listening posts in Zurich.
The screen scrolled through intercepted communications, satellite telemetry, and financial transfers originating from a shell corporation tied directly to the Hollow Court. They were mobilizing. A vanguard of operatives, trained in corporate espionage and high-level assassination, had recently landed in Chicago, attempting to probe the outer perimeters of our digital and physical defenses.
They thought they were hunting a ghost. They didn't realize the ghost had built a fortress with teeth.
Without moving from my chair, I tapped a sequence of keys on the custom terminal, opening a secure channel to Miller’s tactical command center deep beneath the estate.
“Miller,” I said evenly into the encrypted mic.
“Boss,” his calm, gravelly voice responded instantly. “I’m looking at the Zurich telemetry now. Looks like our European friends decided to book an early flight.”
“Let them through the outer security checkpoints,” I instructed, my voice cold and measured. “Give them just enough access to think our perimeter is vulnerable. I want them inside the secondary gardens before we close the trap.”
“Understood,” Miller replied, a faint hint of grim amusement in his tone. “Shall I prepare the welcoming committee?”
May you like
“Use the non-lethal sonic disrupters,” I replied. “I want them conscious, and I want them brought to the subterranean holding facility by midnight. We’re going to send a message back to Zurich that the Moretti family doesn't negotiate with trespassers.”
“Consider it done, Boss.”
